PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -?The temperature dropped Saturday and so have some of the prices at local small businesses on ?Small Business Saturday.?
Business owners in the quaint borough of Haddonfield lured shoppers into stores with signs promising savings.
?Everything in here is 15% off including free shipping on furniture, if you?re local,? said Josh Steinberg.
Things kicked off with Mimosas and Muffins at ?More than Old? along North 3rd Street near Arch Street in Old City.
Beth Gibson runs the shop, which offers a wide variety of gifts mostly made in the USA.
?Small businesses are really important first of all to the economy. If you don?t have small businesses, mom and pop shops, out here when everything gets to be big box you?re not going to have the local economy in play. Everything is going to be imported,? says Gibson.
Shoppers were getting discounts on purchases over $100.
In Manayunk, the famous Main Street retail corridor has hundred of eclectic stores to choose from with markdowns you wouldn?t believe.
?I got a pair of Steve Madden?s for $4,? said shopper Lisa Collins.
Collins purchased her shoes from Green Street Consignment. Hand bags, bracelets and close were among many of the popular items that sold fast, according to manager Gia Ritchie.
Three years ago, American Express created Small Business Saturday, it says, to help small businesses struggling during the recession. They offered a $25 credit to its card holders? who spend at qualifying small businesses.
