Game Console Network Problmes - Multiplayer and Network ...

I will cut to the chase and point out I have a disadvantage when it comes to video game development. I've acquired over the years an astonishing business background and currently hold the title of Associate Director. An opportunity has been presented in front of me for a chance to explore the networking aspects of one of our many departments.

Looking back I really no nothing about some of the basic functions of this department, and will be asking questions left and right. So instead of appearing to know nothing I've decided to ask a few general questions to get me started in the right direction.

(Not: I will switch out the product & company name for liability reasons)

Summary:
A video game console from company Q had its network shutdown after a hand full of years running, but the gaming community continued to play even after a new next Gen console had replaced the original. This next Gen console has backwards capability only for a handful of games from the original console. The gaming community was outraged, and some fans even made emulators just to play some of these non-backwards games (they were successful w/ a few).

However video game R was unable to go back online, and the small emulator revolution quieted down. From what I gather the visual aspects of the game are contained in the client, while the network protocol is handled by the server. The original online network was a tunneling vps system which hosted a friends list and connected clients to each other. It opened a vps connection on port 3074 though which video game R calls system network protcals from the original consoles dashboard network stuff itself in order to run.

Emulation is not possible because we have no data for the original consoles network service + the encryption was never broken. The truth is without the server data packets, we have nothing to build from. With the server, we also run into the problem of data encryption. The original game console is especially difficult because it utilized the original consoles online network. Now without data packets to decrypt, we have no starting point and no chance of ever getting it to work (but that won't stop the department).

To the root of what is to be expected:
Video game R has been chosen to come back on the original game console, and it has both offline & online features. But as of now the online features do not work because the original game consoles network is shut off permanently. What options do we have available now, and is their away around that kind of problem. Is their another network that can be created to replace the disconnected one.

In short that is my mess as of now, and I'm not sure how to handle what will follow...(any advice)

All heart | luke, gracie, adam - News - The Orange County Register

NORTH TUSTIN ? The twins took their first helicopter ride when they were young ? 1 day old.

Grace and Luke Chez, lying side-by-side in incubators, were whisked from the Orange County hospital where they were born to Children's Hospital Los Angeles for life-saving treatment.

Terra and Adam Chez are shown with their children Abbey, 2, and Luke, 7. Their children were born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) ? a third child Grace, Luke's twin, died of the condition at age three on January 9, 2008. Terra and Chez have founded a non-profit, Hopeful Hearts, to raise awareness about CHD.

LEONARD ORTIZ, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

And so began a journey of fear, tragedy and, ultimately, hope.

Grace and Luke's parents, Terra and Adam Chez, would use another word to describe their seven-year saga:

Miraculous.

???

"Hey, princess!"

Abigail Chez, 2?, has just woken from a nap. Her dad greets her as she walks into the kitchen of the Chez home in North Tustin.

With blonde hair, pale skin and blue eyes, Abbey bears a striking resemblance to her sister, "Gracie."

Abbey has something else in common with Gracie. Both children were born with congenital heart disease. So was Luke.

Three kids, all born with the No. 1 cause of infant death in the U.S. The odds of this happening are staggering.

So, too, are the challenges weathered by their parents.

Inspired to reach out to other parents of children with congenital heart disease (known often as CHD), Terra and Adam Chez started a nonprofit, Hopeful Hearts, to raise money and awareness for a condition that gets little public attention even though it affects 1 in 100 babies.

"We want to do something to make a difference for other families going through what we've been through," Adam Chez says.

Adam and Terra --- friends since age 10, married for 12 years --- want more people to know about CHD.

They also want people to know about Gracie.

???

Because she was carrying twins, a potentially high-risk pregnancy, Terra, now 39, was subjected to particularly rigorous prenatal testing.

So the couple ? both healthy, with no history of congenital heart disease in their families --- got the diagnosis early, just 20 weeks into the pregnancy: Gracie and Luke had CHD.

The babies arrived on Feb. 9, 2005. Gracie was born with truncus arteriosus, a critical form of CHD. Luke was diagnosed with tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia --- the same as Abbey would be four years later. This, too, is a critical form of CHD.

Gracie had open-heart surgery when she was four days old. She almost died. Luke had his first surgery at five months.

Luke, now 7, later had a second open-heart surgery, and a third ? to replace a valve ? is coming soon. Abbey has had two surgeries.

Gracie eventually had four. She was the chatty, feisty twin to the quieter Luke. She loved to be around people rather than play with toys.

"She had a wisdom about her," says Adam, 36.

The end came suddenly, and unexpectedly.

On the evening of Jan. 8, 2008, Gracie was taken to the hospital with flu-like symptoms ?- just two days before a scheduled catheterization. One minute she was being treated for dehydration, and the next she coded and was fighting for her life.

The following morning Gracie died from complications of CHD. She'd been in the hospital about eight hours.

She passed away in her father's arms.

???

Luke hops on a lounge chair next to his mother after bouncing on a trampoline in his backyard with his little sister.

Luke, a first-grader, loves baseball and other sports.

Looking at Luke, you see no hint of his medical challenges, though Luke helps clarify things by pulling up his shirt and showing off a thin, pale scar running down the center of his chest.

Luke does this as his parents are describing Hopeful Hearts. It's a foundation he knows something about.

"It's to help children who have special hearts," Luke says. "Like me."

Terra and Adam Chez launched Hopeful Hearts in April 2008.

They did so because they felt there weren't enough resources for parents and families going through the trauma of raising a baby with CHD. It's an ordeal that includes long days and nights in critical-care units. It's a life of anxiety, worry and deep lows; for many, it can be a life of pain.

For now, in-the-womb testing for CHD isn't routine. The non-profit's mission is to promote early detection. The organization also promotes valve research, and provides financial support to children and families living with the condition.

Congenital heart disease receives? 1 cent of every dollar? raised by the American Heart Association. And unlike many other common, life-threatening diseases, there is no dedicated, national organization aimed at fighting CHD.

In its first year, Adam says, Hopeful Hearts provided financial support to 30 families.

???

After they lost Gracie, Terra and Adam were surprised to find that Terra was pregnant again, this time with Abbey.

"I didn't think I could do another girl," Terra says.

She and Adam also didn't think they could cope with another child with CHD.

But they did, and they are.

And their push to help others has grown. Over the last few years, Hopeful Hearts has expanded to provide financial support for around 75 families a year, says Adam, who owns care facilities for the developmentally disabled.

Through their nonprofit, the couple has donated $150,000 to outfit a critical care unit at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. They're also planning a gala, June 9, to raise more money for the cause. Their new goal: $200,000.

???

Terra and Adam say their Christian faith has played a big role in getting them through the trauma of losing Gracie, and in coping with the medical issues their surviving children face.

They also say helping other families dealing with CHD is therapeutic.

"Time spent with the foundation is time spent with Gracie, and time spent in honor of Luke and Abbey,"?Terra says.

Terra watches Abbey run up to her.

In Abbey's face, and in her gleeful screams, Terra sees her departed child -- a girl they now call Angel Gracie.

"Honestly," she says, "giving back is healing for me."

Says Adam: "For me, the foundation keeps Gracie alive. She's still doing great things."

G.L.O.C.: Watch With G.L.O.C. -- Girls Episode 7

2012-05-30-GirlsHBOWelcometoBushwicka.k.a.TheCrackcidentEpisode74550x365.jpg

The episode opens on a shot of Jessa, Hannah, and Marnie on their way to a warehouse party in Bushwick. Jessa is almost carrying off a feathery get-up that's half dying swan, half Tina Turner in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. She gets a text from a random number, but instead of finding out who it's from Jessa just texts back the address of the party. Rebel!

Marnie is jittery -- she's been completely thrown off by her breakup with Charlie. Hannah reassures her that there's very little chance of running into him: "It's like Waterworld in there."

They arrive and find Shoshanna, who's been holding up a wall for two hours: "I am literally so happy to see you I could murder you."

In case you were wondering, Ray and Charlie's band, Questionable Goods, has improved a lot since their last gig. Marnie shuffles up to see Charlie after their set. Turns out having her out of his life has meant that he's got more time for music... and new girlfriends named Audrey! Marnie's reputation hasn't preceded her AT ALL -- "Are you one of those Real Housewives?"

Just when you thought Hannah might have nothing to do, Adam appears! Well, he emerges from the darkness, being crawled over by a bunch of girls in glow in the dark body paint. Ahem.

Ray and Jessa are chatting idly; suddenly Shoshanna is there, talking like the MicroMachines guy; what is WRONG with her? "It was a glass cigarette, and I am high." It becomes clear that Shoshanna has accidently smoked crack. Jessa volunteers to be her Crack Spirit Guide. That is, until Jeff (who she babysits for -- sender of the phantom text!) shows up. Jessa hands her title over to Ray -- he can handle it, right? Shoshanna runs off, yelling incoherently about kick boxing class.

Adam's friend Tako, reveals to Hannah that Adam has been a member of AA for years ("it's the main defining thing about him, right?") She doesn't quite know how to take the news.

Jessa and Jeff are on a fire escape when she almost kills a couple of guys by dropping a wine bottle on them. After following it up with some shit-talk, the guys threaten to kill them. Off to the dance floor!

Ray catches up with Shoshanna, who is either nude from the waist down or just wearing pantyhose (funny either way!) Still high, she kicks the shit out of Ray, who is impressed with her superhuman strength. But in all fairness, "It might have been the crack."

Marnie finds Elijah and tears him away from a make-out session to complain about Charlie. When Elijah calls her out for being selfish, she counters, "No; Hannah's the selfish one! Everybody knows that!" Um... sure.

Poor Jeff. Like many men before him, he gets beat up for his proximity to a mouthy girl, landing him the ER. When Jessa rejects his suggestion that they sleep together, he calls her a tease. Rude, but also... not completely off-base.

Adam invites Hannah to a scrap yard, which he's raiding for materials to build a boat. Soon she's riding high on his bicycle handlebars and everything's idyllic... until Adam stops the bike short and Hannah FLIES to the ground. She's pissed, and not just because of the bloody knees: Why has he never shared his AA status with her? He points out that she never asked. As in "never asked anything except does that feel OK and do you like my skirt"! Touch?. The confrontation between them escalates; Adam finally yells, "Do you want me to be your boyfriend??" We're not privy to the answer, but Hannah's smile in the final shot, squeezed into the back of a cab between Marnie, Adam, and his bike, reveals all.

In this episode we got to see several key relationships (Hannah/Adam, Marnie/Charlie, and Jessa/Jeff) from opposite perspectives. The switch revealed how Hannah, Marnie, and Jessa create narratives that serve themselves alone: Hannah needs to see Adam as distant; Marnie needs to see Charlie as helpless, and Jessa needs to see Jeff paralyzed by lust. But in fact -- shocker! -- these men are 3-dimensional humans who are affected by their actions. The girls' failure to look beyond their own needs means that, until now, they've been deeply implicated in their own unhappiness. It remains to be seen whether they can take these lessons to heart, or whether we're in for more trial and error, which admittedly is a big part of Girls' appeal.

Adventures In Entertaining | Tales and Tails

Bunny here at the keyboard, sharing our Saturday adventure with you.

Every year on Saturday before Memorial Day, the Roanoke Days festival wraps up. ?Saturday at noon, there?s a parade of the old-fashioned sort that Dad?s family really likes. ?They like it so much that they invite themselves to come over whether we?re having a party or not. ?Even though the grill is broken, Mom and Dad decided to have the party anyway. ?Fortunately, Crazy Aunt J (Mom?s sister, not Dad?s) volunteered the use of her grill, so the food was on after all.

Carousel HorseThe day of the parade was supposed to be really hot. ?I think it?s the hottest parade day we?ve ever had since we lived here. ?Mom and Dad made plans for us to stay in the basement in comfort while the parade was going on. ?I had my snazzy pink Thundershirt to wear, too, since they like to blare their sirens and drums sometimes. ?Kuster and Morgan both had their crates downstairs and when people started arriving, Mom took Blue and I downstairs with our beds and left the television on so we could watch something while the humans were outside. ?Dad had some SAR training that morning, so Mom was the only one home with us, at least until Dad could get home from his class.

The StageMom hadn?t realized that people were at the house, because they were hanging out outside and she was finishing getting ready inside. ?When she realized people were here, she hurried Blue and me downstairs and rushed to take the stuff outside to the table. ?As she went out, she pulled the last outside door closed behind her so the cold air wouldn?t go outside so much.

The MidwayShe went to the front to talk with the family and Stepgranny asked her if she could put the fruit salad in the refrigerator. ?Mom went to get it and take it inside and realized that everyone was locked out of the house. ?She called Dad, just before the parade was starting, and he said he was just leaving training. ?Mom had a bad feeling about him getting there to see any of the parade with us, and she reminded him to hurry up. ?Sadly, this meant that I have no pictures from the parade to show you, since the camera was locked inside with us.

The Ferris WheelDown in the basement, I had no worries whatsoever. ?I didn?t know we were locked in and I had Morgan and Kuster to keep me safe, along with my snazzy pink shirt and a comfortable couch. ?As far as I?m concerned, that is the way to enjoy the parade. ?Let the humans sit out there catching candy and sweat.

Just as the parade was getting to the end, Grandpa and Grandma along with Dad?s three youngest brothers, arrived. ?A little bit after that, Dad arrived. ?He unlocked the door and there was a stampede of humans trying to get to the bathroom. ?I was glad I was downstairs for that, although it did get Kuster and Morgan pretty fired up. ?I could have done without the Shepherd Symphony in stereo.

Finally, the humans got the hot dogs on the grill and the party was finally getting started. ?Dad took Kuster upstairs to visit for a while and he promptly went to work on charming Grandma into giving him some food. ?He was working the crowd pretty hard.

I sent Mom up through the festival to get some pictures so you could see a little what it?s like, since I couldn?t go through it myself. ?We found it funny that they put up their rude orange ?No bikes, No skateboards, No animals of any kind? signs along a street where five of the eight houses that we know of all have dogs that live there, and our county is the capitol for feral cats. ?But I?m getting off the subject. ?I sent Mom to do a little shopping a picture-taking, and then she came home.

Kuster Makes His MoveAfter Mom came back, a lot of the humans were leaving. ?Tractor Guy and Peanut?s family had a wedding to go to. ?Hot Dog and Favorite Niece?s family had a graduation party to go to. ?Even Number Nine was at a graduation party for a classmate and had to be picked up. ?So, it was time for the most important part of the party, which was my big appearance.

Blueberry Makes An AppearanceI went out in the heat to greet my company and enjoyed seeing them immensely. Grandma couldn?t resist feeding me potato chips and being a good hostess, I had to oblige. ?I mean, really, it would have been rude not to. ?After a few minutes, Blueberry came out to join us, too. ?We charmed the guests as best we could until we just couldn?t take the heat anymore and Dad brought us inside. ?The rest of our guests had to leave at that point, anyway.

And Potato Chips Will Fall From the SkyIt was a shorter party than usual, but it was a lot of fun. ?The best part was that Dad cooked some hot dogs on the grill just for us, which we enjoyed for dinner and for breakfast on Sunday. ?Just call me the hostess with the mostest! ?We?ll see everyone back in July for our fireworks party.

RIM's top lawyer joins parade of resignations

TORONTO (Reuters) - The top lawyer at Research In Motion Ltd has resigned and will soon leave the struggling BlackBerry maker, RIM said on Monday, joining a parade of long-time company executives to depart since Thorsten Heins took over as CEO earlier this year.

The loss of Chief Legal Officer Karima Bawa - who litigated numerous patent disputes and helped write many of RIM's commercial deals - follows the resignation of RIM's head of global sales, Patrick Spence, last week.

"Thorsten Heins is reframing the RIM organization. Not everyone will fit into the new picture," said IDC analyst Kevin Restivo. "Departures, forced or otherwise, are inevitable anytime management sets a new course for an organization."

The resignations come ahead of what are expected to be massive layoffs this year as the company prepares to launch BlackBerry smartphones run by an operating system completely different from that used in its legacy phones.

RIM's shares have fallen some 75 percent in the last year while its market share has shriveled against competition from iPhone maker Apple Inc and a slew of manufacturers using Google Inc's Android operating system.

RIM's Toronto-listed rose 0.9 percent to C$11.34 late Monday afternoon. The company's Nasdaq-listed shares were not trading due to a U.S. holiday.

Bawa, who joined RIM in 2000, was promoted to general counsel and chief legal officer in late 2010.

She plans to stay with the company while a replacement is hired and during a transition, RIM said in an emailed statement after Reuters asked about Bawa's status.

Analysts and former employees have long complained about what they viewed as a hyper-cautious corporate approach at RIM. That grew out of a drawn-out patent dispute early in the company's rise and was exacerbated by the hiring of a slew of in-house lawyers afterwards.

CLEANING HOUSE

RIM is quietly cleaning out layers of management and recruiting fresh faces to fill important roles in a new structure being fashioned under Heins, who himself replaced longtime co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie in January.

"Thorsten has a very different leadership style," said one former RIM employee who left several months ago. "He is picking a very specific organizational structure, inner circle, external hires and strategy, and a lot of folks aren't 100 percent comfortable with it."

The former employee spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect his ongoing business relationship with the company.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company currently employs around 16,500 people globally. Two sources with close connections to RIM have told Reuters that RIM plans to bring its workforce closer to 10,000 by early next year.

The sources asked to go unidentified because their disclosures would hurt their relationships with RIM.

The cuts will affect RIM's legal, marketing, sales, operations, and human resources divisions, one of the sources said.

"The Research In Motion people have come to know is very likely to be a much smaller organization in the near future," said IDC's Restivo. "It's a reflection of the company's smartphone struggles. Call it an trailing indicator if you will."

RIM's share of the global smartphone market slipped to 6.7 percent in the first quarter of 2012 from 13.6 percent a year earlier, according to IDC.

A round of 2,000 job cuts was planned for around June 1, the day before the end of RIM's quarter, the Globe and Mail said on Saturday, citing several people close to the company.

Last July RIM said it cut 2,000 jobs, after its worker count ballooned to near 20,000 following a string of acquisitions in recent years.

Balsillie remains the departure with the highest profile. While cutting all formal ties to the company, he remains a major shareholder. Lazaridis is still influential on the board.

A chief operating officer, Jim Rowan, and the head of software David Yach left in March. Soon after, Alan Brenner, a senior vice president for the BlackBerry platform, and Alistair Mitchell, vice president for the BlackBerry Messenger instant messaging product, also left.

The head of RIM's India unit left in November, its head of government relations left months before that, and former chief marketing officer Keith Pardy departed more than a year ago.

RIM said this month it had replaced Pardy with wireless veteran Frank Boulben, who has yet to start work.

It has also named Kristian Tear as its single chief operating officer. He replaces Heins, who took the CEO job, Rowan, who departed, and a third operating head, Don Morrison, who retired last year.

Military spouses celebrated at Fort Meade appreciation luncheon

FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. (May 17, 2012) -- Military spouses contribute greatly to the stability of their families and are the backbone of the armed forces.

That was the sentiment Audrey Rothstein, wife of Garrison Commander Col. Edward C. Rothstein, shared with 85 military spouses during the installation's annual Military Spouse Appreciation Luncheon on May 10 at Club Meade.

"Whether you realize it or not, you volunteered to join the Army, or the military, too, when you said 'I do' to your service member. And for that, you are immediately set apart from all other spouses of the world," she said. "You stand above the others not only for your strength, determination and resiliency but also for your tremendous sacrifice -- and for some -- the ultimate sacrifice."

Audrey Rothstein and Frank Klein, husband of Navy Rear Adm. Margaret Klein, chief of staff, U.S. Cyber Command, were the guest speakers for the 90-minute event, which was sponsored by Army Community Service.

"I think it was fantastic," Natalie Overby, wife of Ensign James Overby of the Naval Information Operations Command, said of the program. "I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about how life is for military spouses."

Celena Flowers, Family Advocacy Program manager at ACS, emceed the luncheon. Garrison Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Sid Taylor gave the invocation.

The event also was attended by Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Charles E. Smith and his wife, Audrey; and Debbie Alexander, wife of Gen. Keith B. Alexander, commander of U.S. Cyber Command, chief of the Central Security Service and director of the National Security Agency.

In his remarks, Klein called military spouses "American heroes."

"Real heroes see the right thing and they do the right thing, no matter the cost," he said. "What you have sacrificed for your uniformed partner to do what he or she does is the right thing, and I have learned that it doesn't come without a cost."

Klein retired as a Navy commander in 2000. In August, he and his wife will have been married 30 years. They are the parents of two adult children.

Military spouses embody the statement "not self, but country," Klein said, noting that the commitment of military spouses is reflected in two national organizations.

Klein spoke about the National Military Family Association founded in 1969 by a group of military wives during the Vietnam War. The women wanted to make sure their widowed friends would be properly taken care of after the death of their uniformed spouse.

Two years later, the military's Survivor Benefit Plan became law.

"Congress didn't do it without a push from people who cared," Klein said. "And the people who cared were military spouses."

Klein also spoke about Bonnie Carroll, a major in the Air Force Reserve, who established the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors in 1994 after her husband, Brig. Gen. Tom Carroll, died in a plane crash. TAPS helps grieving families by providing ongoing, peer-based emotional support.

Carroll was a military wife who "channeled her grief into something positive -- not for self, but for country," Klein said.

Military spouses, he said, put aside their personal ambitions to serve the greater good.

"You take care of the family, you take care of the uniformed service member, you take care of each other, you take care of Team Meade," Klein said. "And you take care of our country's defense."

In his welcoming remarks, the garrison commander thanked Fort Meade's military spouses for their commitment to their service member and family.

"We want to thank you for everything you've done to make us whole," Col. Rothstein said. "The backbone of our Soldiers and our service members really is the family, and that starts with you."

The colonel called his wife an "incredible caretaker" as the mother of their two children, Sam and Emily.

"The strength she's had and her personal courage mean a lot," he said.

After the event, Darryl Bradley, husband of Navy Senior Chief Michele Brady, 10th Command/10th Fleet at the National Security Agency, said the speeches were meaningful.

"It felt good that Colonel Rothstein and his wife said thank you," he said.

Guest Commentary: President Obama should make Chimney Rock a national monument

Between Pagosa Springs and Durango is one of the country's most important cultural areas. Chimney Rock encompasses hundreds of Ancestral Puebloan archeological sites within the shadow of its soaring twin spires. Few more ancient and ethereal places exist in all of America.

Without question, Chimney Rock is a vital part of our shared cultural heritage. Yet it has never received the funding, recognition or protection it so richly deserves. The National Trust for Historic Preservation wants to change that, and we are asking all Coloradoans to stand with us.

On May 7, I sent a letter to President Obama requesting that he exercise his authority under the Antiquities Act to establish the Chimney Rock National Monument. He has used this authority twice in the last year, and we believe there are compelling reasons for him to do the same here.

For starters, Chimney Rock is a true architectural marvel. Crafted by the Chacoan people while Europe was still in the midst of the Middle Ages, it comprises 6 million stones and 25,000 tons of earth and clay, all transported two miles to the top of the mesa without the wheel.

Perhaps the most dramatic and well-known of the remaining buildings is the Great House Pueblo, which was likely used as an observatory for the annual summer solstice and, every 18 years, the northern lunar standstill. The pueblo is perfectly positioned to frame the rising moon between Chimney Rock's twin spires, and the mystical sight still draws visitors today.

Indeed, Chimney Rock remains a place of great spiritual and cultural significance to modern Pueblo Indians. It is their story, written on the land. And their story is an inextricable part of our collective American story. In a very tangible way, preserving Chimney Rock helps to weave our multi-cultural nation together.

That's why the National Trust asked President Obama for this national monument designation. As an organization, we work to save the places that tell America's stories. We identify National Treasures like Chimney Rock, and then engage a wide range of people and partners in strategic campaigns to protect these irreplaceable places.

In the case of Chimney Rock, we have worked closely with the Colorado congressional delegation, which strongly supports the national monument designation, over the past few years to introduce legislation in Congress. But so far, the bills have languished.

Meanwhile, this remarkable place has no designation equivalent to its significance. Its annual budget supports just two part-time federal employees. Dedicated volunteers at the non-profit Chimney Rock Interpretative Association operate the site, and they do a fantastic job, as evidenced by the fact that more than 9,000 people visit Chimney Rock during the five months it's open every year.

A national monument designation could expand that number dramatically. Such designations typically bring people, which would mean much-needed heritage tourist dollars in the Archuleta County and Four Corners areas. They also spur increased federal funding and resources, both of which would enhance the visitor experience, while permitting Indian tribes and pueblos to continue their traditional practices.

Local, regional and national leaders have lined up behind this designation, recognizing it as a "win-win" outcome. Bi-partisan supporters include: the Colorado congressional delegation; the Archuleta County commissioners; the Town of Pagosa Springs; the Pagosa Springs Chamber of Commerce; national, regional and local preservation and conservation organizations; community partners and archeologists.

This unique place clearly deserves protection. With that in mind, I ask all Coloradoans to join us in urging President Obama to utilize his authority under the Antiquities Act to establish the Chimney Rock National Monument. Together, we can ensure that a true national treasure endures for generations to come.

Stephanie K. Meeks is the president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, D.C.

President Obama honors veterans during Memorial Day weekend

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama is paying tribute to veterans during Memorial Day weekend, honoring those willing to sacrifice their lives for their country.

Obama says in his weekly radio and Internet address he will mark Monday?s holiday with veterans and their families at Arlington National Cemetery and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The president says the nation needs to honor veterans, including those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, by ensuring they have access to health care, higher education and jobs.

In the Republican address, congresswoman Lynn Jenkins of Kansas says higher prices from gasoline to groceries have placed a strain on families. She is calling for building the controversial Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL oil pipeline.

Robust empirical relationships for estimating the carbonate system in the southern California Current System and application to CalCOFI hydrographic cruise data (2005?2011)

Robust empirical relationships for estimating the carbonate system in the southern California Current System and application to CalCOFI hydrographic cruise data?(2005?2011)

The California Current System (CCS) is expected to experience the ecological impacts of ocean acidification (OA) earlier than most other ocean regions because coastal upwelling brings old, CO2-rich water relatively close to the surface ocean. Historical inorganic carbon measurements are scarce, so the progression of OA in the CCS is unknown. We used a multiple linear regression approach to generate empirical models using oxygen (O2), temperature (T), salinity (S), and sigma theta (??) as proxy variables to reconstruct pH, carbonate saturation states, carbonate ion concentration ([CO32?]), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration, and total alkalinity (TA) in the southern CCS. The calibration data included high-quality measurements of carbon, oxygen, and other hydrographic variables, collected during a cruise from British Columbia to Baja California in May?June 2007. All resulting empirical relationships were robust, with r2 values >0.92 and low root mean square errors. Estimated and measured carbon chemistry matched very well for independent data sets from the CalCOFI and IMECOCAL programs. Reconstructed CCS pH and saturation states for 2005?2011 reveal a pronounced seasonal cycle and inter-annual variability in the upper water column. Deeper in the water column, conditions are stable throughout the annual cycle, with perennially low pH and saturation states. Over sub-decadal time scales, these empirical models provide a valuable tool for reconstructing carbonate chemistry related to ocean acidification where direct observations are limited. However, progressive increases in anthropogenic CO2 content of southern CCS water masses must be carefully addressed to apply the models over longer time scales.

Childhood Cancer Survivors at Risk for Long-Term Emotional Distress

By Traci Pedersen Associate News Editor

Childhood Cancer Survivors at Risk for Long-Term Emotional DistressSurvivors of childhood cancer are at greater risk for persistent hair loss and disfigurement, and for some individuals that may lead to long-term emotional distress, according to a new study.

Compared to their siblings, cancer survivors have more scarring and disfigurement on their arms, legs and head later in life. And, on average, adults with these traits tend to have more depression and a lower quality of life.

?I think it showed us these aren?t necessarily life-threatening late effects of cancer? but certainly we need to be more aware of the outcomes these patients are dealing with,? said Karen Kinahan, coordinator of the STAR Survivorship Program at the Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center of Northwestern University in Chicago.

Kinahan and her team analyzed information on 14,358 childhood cancer survivors and 4,023 of their siblings already participating in a different study.

Survivors of leukemia, lymphoma and kidney cancers who had been diagnosed before they were 21 years old (and had started treatment between 1970 and 1987) answered a questionnaire when they entered the study and another in 2003.

Overall, one-fourth of the survivors had a scar or disfigurement on their head or neck, compared to one in 12 of their siblings. Cancer survivors were also more likely to have scars or disfigurements on their arms, legs, chests and stomachs.

Scars and disfigurements can be caused by surgery or radiation. And in children who are still growing, areas that are radiated tend not to grow as well, according to Dr. Karen Wasilewski-Masker, a pediatric oncologist at Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta. This may result in cancer survivors looking out of proportion as they age.

Individuals with scars or disfigurements on their head, neck, arms or legs had a 20 percent higher risk of depression than those without scars, according to the researchers.

Cancer survivors also experienced more hair loss than their siblings?about 14 percent of survivors and six percent of cancer-free siblings reported going bald. And balding was also linked to depression, especially in women.

The researchers found that various aspects of cancer survivors? quality of life were worse and were linked to scarring, disfigurements and hair loss. These included general health, physical ability, pain, mental health and social functioning.

?We need to be aware of the possibility of some psychosocial problems in patients that have some type of disfigurement? but we also need to not assume that just because a person may look different because of a cancer treatment that it?s impacting them in a negative way,? said Wasilewski-Masker, who is part of Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta?s program for childhood cancer survivors.

In a separate study, published in the same journal, researchers found that nearly three-fourths of 388 people between 15 and 39 years old were back at work or school full-time within 15 to 35 months of being diagnosed with cancer. ?More than half, however, experienced trouble when they returned, including forgetting things and struggling to keep up with the work.

?Really this study is a starting point to understand the groups in this population who are least likely to return to work. It really sets the stage for future studies,? said Helen Parsons, the study?s lead author from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Wasilewski-Masker added that there are differences between cancer patients when making the determination of whether to stop working or going to school. For example, high school and college students are typically still financially supported by their parents, and patients? abilities may depend on the intensity of their treatment.

The report is published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

You Are Probably Too Young To Have an Estate Plan ? Scottsdale ...

A good friend of mine, in his middle thirties, recently had a minor outpatient surgery.? His insurance covered the costs; it wasn?t a big risk; he didn?t worry about the outcome; and planning for what might happen in the event of a serious complication never crossed his mind.

He ended up having serious complications.? And in the long recuperation period, he had much more motivation to reflect upon his mortality (and the possible end thereof). ?Fortunately, he is still alive.? Fortunately, he still has opportunity to get his affairs in order.

If you are too young, or too poor, or too free of obligation, or too healthy, or too secure to do an estate plan . . . my friend might have something to tell you.

An estate plan makes sense to everyone who has any of the following:

?? Minor children, or other potential minor beneficiaries

?? Children from a prior relationship

?? An IRA, 401k, 403b or other retirement/pension plan

?? A business interest

?? Assets that need to be protected

?? Beneficiaries who need to be protected

?? A beneficiary with a special need

?? Over $100,000 in total assets

Part of an effective estate plan are proper health care documents:

?? Living Will ? do you want your life to be extended at all costs, or at some point do you want someone to stop the heroic measures to keep your heart beating if you are never coming back?

?? Health Care Power of Attorney ? who will make health care decisions for you if you are not able, and who will enforce the terms of your Living Will?

?? HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) form ? who has access to your protected health information, especially in the event of an emergency or end of life situation?

?? Mental Health Power of Attorney ? who will authorize the full-scale mental health evaluation if necessary, and where can you be placed to provide for your mental health care?

Age, income, net worth, and present security have little to do with the eventualities that can befall if, like my friend, matters take a sudden and serious turn for the worst.

If any of the above considerations applies to you, it would be wise to seek competent counsel about an estate plan appropriate for your circumstances.

Business Travel: Business Travel Advice

How to make the most of business travel

To some, the idea of traveling to Los Angeles one weekend and Bangkok the next for business sounds exciting and exotic. However, 2 a.m. red-eye flights, expense account over-eating, short weekends and most importantly the time spent away from families can get old quickly.

Business trips are an important part of many careers and are inevitable. Business travel shouldn't be seen as a chore; it allows you the opportunity to travel to places you might not normally visit and to do so practically for free - so why not make the most of it?

There are several ways to enjoy your business trips. First, consider bringing along spouses, boyfriends/girlfriends, children or the entire family and extending your business trip to include fun vacation time. The flight and hotel are already paid, the only extra costs that would incur would be airline tickets for anyone coming along and the cost for the extra days spent away. Many hotels don't even charge extra for children. However, before taking along other people on business, especially children, make sure first that it is okay with the boss. Second, make sure you'll have time to spend with anyone traveling with you and that not all your time will be spent in meetings.

The truth is, the more you enjoy business travel - the more relaxed you'll be for any meetings or presentations. In fact, your company may even see this as a good thing. They realize business trips aren't always fun, therefore the more you enjoy going on them, the more willing you will be to go on more in the future. Also, if you travel often to one destination for business, the more sightseeing you do within the city, the more familiar you'll be with the location making it easier to relate and talk with local executives.

If extending the trip or bringing along family isn't an option, there are other ways to make business travel more fun and less of a chore. First of all, visit the Convention and Visitor's Bureau Web site for the city you will be traveling to on business. The Web sites give tons of information on the sightseeing opportunities and often will have sample travel itineraries. Also, greeter programs are popping up in many major cities like Chicago and New York. A greeter program allows you to be paired up with a local, bilingual tour guide who can show you around the city. The perks of greeter programs are that they can be arranged at whatever time works for you and they oftentimes are free.

Hotel concierges are extremely familiar with the city within which they work and the immediate area by the hotel. Whether you have a free afternoon, an hour to spare, or are just looking for somewhere to eat, the hotel concierge can inform you of many fun, local activities to partake in.

Last, you don't have to limit your business travel fun to just simple sightseeing. Try taking a cooking class one evening or do something daring like skydiving or swimming with the sharks. The*options are limitless.

El Nino weather and climate change threaten survival of baby leatherback sea turtles

El Nino weather and climate change threaten survival of baby leatherback sea turtles

Thursday, May 24, 2012

When leatherback turtle hatchlings dig out of their nests buried in the sandy Playa Grande beach in northwest Costa Rica, they enter a world filled with dangers. This critically endangered species faces threats that include egg poaching and human fishing practices. Now, Drexel University researchers have found that the climate conditions at the nesting beach affect the early survival of turtle eggs and hatchlings. They predict, based on projections from multiple models, that egg and hatchling survival will drop by half in the next 100 years as a result of global climate change.

"Temperature and humidity inside the nest are significant factors affecting egg and hatchling survival," said Dr. James Spotila, the Betz Chair Professor of Environmental Science in Drexel's College of Arts and Sciences, and senior author of the study reported today in the journal PLoS ONE (http://dx.plos.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0037602). Spotila and colleagues, including lead author Dr. Pilar Santidrian Tomillo of Drexel, therefore examined the relationship between regional climate patterns with leatherback turtles' nesting success over six consecutive nesting seasons at Playa Grande. This beach is the major nesting site for leatherback turtles in the eastern Pacific Ocean, containing more than 40 percent of nests.

"We have discovered a clear link between climate and survival of this endangered sea turtle population," said Spotila.

The turtles' hatching success and success emerging from the nest was significantly correlated with weather patterns associated with the El Ni?o Southern Oscillation (ENSO). ENSO is an irregular pattern of periodic climate variation, shifting between "El Ni?o" periods with warmer sea surface temperature conditions in the eastern tropical Pacific, and "La Ni?a" conditions with cooler sea surface temperatures, with ENSO neutral conditions in between. The El Ni?o cycle is known to influence many ecological processes that vary from location to location.

The researchers found that warmer, dryer El Ni?o conditions were associated with significantly higher mortality for eggs and hatchlings. Using projections of global climate change due to global warming over the next 100 years, they predicted that El Ni?o conditions will become more frequent and hatchling success will decline throughout the 21st century at Playa Grande and other nesting beaches that experience similar effects.

As climate conditions change, leatherbacks nesting at Playa Grande cannot move to other beaches. Spotila noted that the beach characteristics and off-shore ocean currents move hatchlings to feeding grounds on a kind of "hatchling highway" that makes Playa Grande an optimal nesting location for leatherbacks that other beaches cannot replace. Spotila was senior author of a modeling study demonstrating this pattern, led by Dr. George Shillinger of Stanford University and published in the June 2012 issue of Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Spotila has conducted research with nesting leatherback turtles at Las Baulas Park in Costa Rica, where Playa Grande is located, for 22 years. He recently joined the faculty of Drexel's new Department of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science (BEES), formed as a result of the University's unique affiliation with the Academy of Natural Sciences, the oldest natural history museum in the U.S. and a world leader in biodiversity and environmental research.

"The focus on field research and experiential learning in the BEES department will enable more research in environmental science in more places around the world," Spotila said. "As in our long-term leatherback studies, more research by Drexel and Academy students and scientists will contribute to a better understanding of what actions are needed to protect species and environments in critical danger."

Leatherback turtles, Spotila says, are in critical need of human help to survive. "Warming climate is killing eggs and hatchlings," Spotila said. "Action is needed, both to mitigate this effect and, ultimately, to reverse it to avoid extinction. We need to change fishing practices that kill turtles at sea, intervene to cool the beach to save the developing eggs and find a way to stop global warming. Otherwise, the leatherback and many other species will be lost."
