Small Business Development Center: Veterans wanted | Star ...

The Small Business Development Center at Culpeper is looking for a few good military men or women to recognize for its Small Business Veteran of the Year award.

The deadline to submit nominations is Oct. 10 and the winner will be announced during a ceremony in November.

Started in 2000 by the Virginia SBDC network, the award honors veterans for their service to their country and to their communities.

However, this is the first time Culpeper will be involved in the annual statewide event.

?There?s a large presence of military veterans in Virginia,? said David C. Reardon, business consultant for the SBDC at Culpeper. ?We want to give special recognition to those veterans who are running small businesses. That?s one major reason for having this award.?

Each SBDC in Virginia recognizes a veteran in their service area and the local winners are then nominated for a statewide award, according to Reardon.

The nominee must be a veteran who has been honorably discharged or retired from any United States of America branch of military services and has his/her business located in Virginia.

?The nominee will be a Culpeper County business person recognized as making a significant contribution to the local and state?s economy through their community and business involvement,? Reardon added.

The SBDC at Culpeper is also a cooperative program sponsored by Lord Fairfax Community College, the U.S. Small Business Administration, Culpeper County and the Culpeper County Chamber of Commerce.

Submit nominations to the SBDC at Culpeper office at 233 E. Davis St., Suite 300, Culpeper. Applications are available at smallbizvetaward.org. For additional questions contact SBDC at Culpeper at 727-0638 or 868-7093.
