When Nighttime Freaks Me Out

I enjoy nighttime. It is a time when I can wind down from the day, spend some uninterrupted quality time with my husband, write artices, and then go to bed at a reasonable time so that I will be rested for the next day. However, there are some things about nighttime that freak me out.

I consider myself a strong person. I frequently tell people, "I'm good. I'm tough." One thing that really freaks me out at night, however, is when someone knocks on the door of our home late at night and then, when my husband answers the door, the visitor asks my husband a question and looks inside as if he is casing our house and making plans to come back and rob us. We experienced an incident like this late one night in early October. I was scared after it happened, and I kept expecting the visitor (or one or more of his friends) to return, rob our house, and disrupt our lives. Luckily, thank God, we have been safe. I pray that we will remain safe. Fortunately, the other things that freak me out at night are not life-threatening.

A second thing that freaks me out at night is seeing a large cockroach in the bathroom. Normally, cockroaches do not scare me. They are germy and gross, but generally not scary. If I have to go to the bathroom during the night, I am not expecting to se a cockroach when I go in there, however. If I do see one, it startles me. I then try my hardest to kill it. I do not want it to get away, because it will lay eggs, which will hatch into hundreds of baby cockroaches. Another reason why I do not want the big roach to get away is because it may turn up in a place where I do not want to see it, such as our bed. Once I have killed it, I can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that the roach is dead. I also make a mental note to give the house a thorough cleaning over the weekend, mopping the floor with bleach in an effort to keep the roaches away. There is a third thing that freaks me out that is not germy and generally not a threat to my safety: loud claps of thunder.

Like many people, I have busy days. Most days, I write artices and run. In addition, I fix meals, tend to the house, and help my husband with activities that he needs help with. After all of this, I am tired at the end of the day. It usually does not take me very long to fall asleep. I am a light sleeper, however, and noises wake me up. When I hear loud claps of thunder, for example, I wake up, startled. I then settle down and go back to sleep, realizing that it is just a storm.

Many things about nighttime, such as the peaceful sound of chirping crickets, a star-lit sky, and the John Tesh Radio Show, are wonderful. At night, I find it much better to think about these things. That way, I can sleep soundly and dream sweet dreams.
