?Green Bay - The NFL announced Sunday afternoon that the salary cap has finally been set for the 2012 season.
As expected, it will be practically flat from the '11 season.
The increase this year is $220,000 to $120.6 million, meaning teams are going to have about the same room to work with that they had a year ago. Teams were allowed to carry over cap money from '11, but they were able to do that in the past through fake incentives so the difference won't be that great.
What does it all mean for the Packers?
Practically nothing because they've been operating from te assumption the cap would be around $120 million. My calculations have them about $5-6 million under, but I'm trying to verify that because I haven't checked for awhile.
The Packers still have the money to re-sign all of their free agents, but expect them to make some financial moves Monday and Tuesday to create more cap space.
They have the option of cutting or restructuring veterans Donald Driver and Chad Clifton - releasing both would gain them more than $10 million of space -- and they very well could trim in other places. They also could do some restructuring that would gain them cap space.
Free agency starts Tuesday at 3 p.m.
The NFL also announced the franchise tag numbers for this season. They are as follows:
Quarterback: $14.436 million
Running back: $7.742 million
Wide receiver: $9.515 million
Tight end: $5.446 million
Offensive line: $9.383 million
Defensive end: $10.605 million
Defensive tackle: $7.96 million
Linebacker: $8.856 million
Cornerback: $10.281 million
Safety: $6.212 million
Kicker/Punter: $2.654 million
