Officials: Russia killer demands Pussy Riot freed

MOSCOW (AP) ? The bodies of two murdered women were found beneath a scrawled message demanding freedom for jailed members of Pussy Riot, Russian officials said Thursday. An investigator cautioned that the killer was possibly trying to mislead police by drawing attention to supporters of the punk provocateurs.

The Investigative Committee said in a statement that the women, aged 76 and 38, were killed late last week in their apartment in the central city of Kazan with the words "Free Pussy Riot" written on the wall, "presumably" with blood. The substance has not yet been confirmed, it said.

It did not provide the women's names and did not reveal details about their occupations or whether they had any connection to the band. Russian tabloid Lifenews quoted an unnamed investigator as saying that the bodies were disfigured by multiple stab wounds.

The jailed band members' attorney said on Twitter that "what happened in Kazan is horrible," calling the case "either a horrendous provocation or a psychopathic" case.

"I am sorry that some freaks are using Pussy Riot's band name," Nikolai Polozov was further quoted by Interfax as saying.

In mid-August, a Moscow court sentenced three band members to two years in jail for performing a "punk prayer" against President Vladimir Putin at a Moscow cathedral in February.

The case has polarized Russians. Kremlin-friendly television networks and media covered the "prayer" in mostly negative terms, and the country's dominant Orthodox Church called their stunt sacrilegious. But, hundreds of artists, musicians and other intellectuals have signed petitions urging authorities to free the band members.

An investigator in Kazan said that the murderer was trying to cover up the crime by attributing the murder to the band's supporters.

The criminal "was trying to avoid suspicion" by misleading police, Andrey Sheptitsky said in televised remarks.

Several wooden crosses that stood outside Orthodox churches in Russia and neighboring Ukraine have been toppled by people who claimed to be the band's supporters. The band's manager and husband of one of the jailed rockers said the band disapproved of the vandalism.

The trial, widely seen as Kremlin-orchestrated, caused an international furor. Celebrities such as Paul McCartney and Peter Gabriel urged Russian authorities to free the band.

A poll released Thursday by the state-run VTsIOM polling agency showed that one third of Russians consider the two-year jail sentence too harsh, while another 31 per cent found it appropriate. The survey questioned 1,600 people nationwide Aug. 25-26 and gave a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

Syrian rebels claim to shoot down helicopter

BEIRUT (AP) ? A Syrian military helicopter crashed in a ball of fire Monday after apparently being hit during clashes between government forces and rebels in the capital Damascus, activists said, in a sign of the fighters' growing abilities as they struggle to topple President Bashar Assad's regime.

A video posted on the Internet showed the chopper engulfed in flames and spinning out of control shortly before it hit the ground amid bursts of gunfire near a mosque. Rebels shout "Allahu Akbar!" or God is great, as the helicopter went down. The authenticity of the video could not be independently verified.

In Paris, French President Francois Hollande ratcheted up the diplomatic pressure on the already isolated Assad regime, calling on the Syrian opposition to form a provisional government and saying France would recognize it once it was formed.

The announcement from Hollande ? believed to be the first of its kind ?also appeared to be an attempt to jolt Syria's deeply fragmented opposition into unity. But Syria's fractured opposition has been rife with infighting since the anti-Assad revolt broke out in March 2011, and it is far from clear whether it could cobble together a provisional administration anytime soon.

"France asks the Syrian opposition to form a provisional government ? inclusive and representative ? that can become the legitimate representative of the new Syria," Hollande said in a speech to France's ambassadors. "France will recognize the provisional government of Syria once it is formed."

Syria's lightly armed rebels have grown bolder and their tactics more sophisticated in recent months. There have been claims of fighters shooting down helicopter gunships in the past, though the government has never confirmed it.

With its forces stretched thin by fighting on multiple fronts, Assad's regime has increasingly turned to air power, unleashing both helicopters and fighter jets on the rebels.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which along with other activists reported the chopper crash, said there was intense fighting between troops backed by helicopter gunships and rebels in the western Damascus neighborhood of Jobar.

Syria's state-run news agency confirmed the crash in the district of al-Qaboun, which is near Jobar and a hotbed of Sunni Muslim rebels fighting to topple Assad. SANA gave no details about the cause of the crash in its one-line report, perhaps an implicit acknowledgement that it had been brought down by the rebels.

The opposition fighters are not known to have any answer to the regime's warplanes except anti-aircraft guns that they mostly use as an anti-personnel weapon. Last month, rebels claimed to have shot down a Russian-made MiG fighter, but the government blamed the crash on a technical malfunction.

The helicopter in the grainy video appeared to be a Russian-built Mi-8, or its similar but more powerful variant, the Mi-17. The easy-to-maintain, twin-turbine choppers are the most widely produced and exported helicopters in the world. The Mi-8, which can carry 24 troops, has been in Syrian air force service since the 1970s.

The military has for more than a month been fighting major battles against rebels in Damascus and its suburbs while engaged in what appears to be a stalemated fight in the north against rebels for control of Aleppo, the nation's largest city and commercial capital. The government has recently intensified its offensive to recapture districts in Damascus and its suburbs that have fallen into rebel hands.

Over the weekend, evidence mounted of mass killings by government forces in the Damascus suburb of Daraya.

Activists reported that regime forces went on a days-long killing spree after they seized Daraya from rebels Thursday. Reports of the death toll ranged from more than 300 to as many as 600. It was impossible to independently verify the numbers because of severe restrictions on media coverage of the conflict.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said more than 300 people were killed in fighting in the Damascus suburbs over the weekend, including 150 in one location.

She cited reports from human rights activists that some were killed point-blank "in the most brutal way at the hands of the regime" in Daraya. But she added that the U.S. reporting on the toll was also based on information from its own contacts inside Syria.

Despite the escalating violence, Nuland did not endorse France's call for the Syrian opposition to form a provisional government, saying "it's a matter for them (Syrians) to decide if and when they may be prepared to start naming folks."

The U.S. has called for Assad to step down, but so far has limited its support for the rebels to "non-lethal" assistance, meaning supplies and help that do not include ammunition or weapons.

In New York, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for an immediate, independent investigation into the Daraya killings. U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky also said the killings underscore the urgent need to move "from bloodshed to political dialogue" and the need to hold those responsible for "atrocities" accountable.

Video posted on the Internet by activists showed rows of bodies, many of them men with gunshot wounds to the head. During mass burials on Sunday, bodies were sprayed with water from hoses ? a substitute for the ritual washing prescribed by Islam in the face of so many dead. The gruesome images appeared to expose the lengths to which Assad's authoritarian regime was willing to go to put down the rebellion that broke out in March last year.

In the north, thousands of Syrians fleeing violence were stuck at the border with Turkey after Turkish authorities blocked access to any more refugees while they rushed to build more camps to accommodate the deluge.

The refugee crisis is just one of many examples of how the civil war is spilling across borders into neighboring countries such as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan ? all of which have seen a massive influx of Syrians.

A Turkish official said the refugees still stuck on the Syrian side will be allowed in "within a day or two" when a new camp near the border is ready. Another official said Turkey also was carrying out more stringent security checks on the refugees, adding to the delays in crossing.

Turkey fears that Kurdish rebels fighting for self-rule in southeast Turkey may be coming in through Syria. There are also concerns that foreign jihadists are moving in and out of Turkey to fight the Syrian regime. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because there were not authorized to brief the media.

The official Syrian News Agency, SANA, also reported that authorities released 378 people detained for participation in peaceful street protests. It said those freed were never involved in acts of violence, an indirect admission that scores of people were detained for simply taking part in peaceful anti-government protests.

Authorities have issued similar pardons in the past, a practice apparently designed to isolate the rebels and create the image of a compassionate regime.

Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa said Syria approved of an initiative Iran plans to present at a world gathering of nonaligned nations in Tehran later this week. Iran says it plans talks on a peace plan to end Syria's civil war, but hasn't provided any details.

Any Iranian initiative proposing dialogue between the government and the opposition would likely be a nonstarter because rebels refuse to talk to Assad and because of Tehran's close bonds with his regime.

Google Named Happiest Company in America ... Again

For the second time in three years, Google ranks as the happiest place to work, a new study finds.

The technology giant tops this year's Bliss Leap Award winners from online career community CareerBliss, which ranks companies for making strides to create happier work environments.

The company's climb back to the top, after a year in which its measure of overall employee happiness declined, was attributed to its commitment to providing support and growth opportunities.

"Like any organization, company culture is always changing and adapting with new management, policies, and company growth," said Matt Miller, co-founder and chief technical officer of CareerBliss. "Google tells an interesting story, of how dynamic a workplace can change in just one year."

CareerBliss compiled its rankings by getting employee evaluations on 10 key factors that affect happiness: work/life balance, one's relationship with his or her boss and co-workers, work environment, job resources, compensation, growth opportunities, company culture, company reputation, daily tasks, and job control over the work performed on a daily basis. The data were then compared from last year's to determine the companies with the greatest gains in employee happiness.

The other companies in this year's Top 10 are:

  • SuperMedia
  • Unisys
  • GE Capital Bank
  • Rockwell Collins
  • Ernst & Young
  • Dyn Corp
  • Applied Materials
  • Coco-Cola Co.
  • AECOM Technology

All of the companies in the Top 10 experienced an increase in employee happiness by more than 12 percent from 2011, according to the survey.

"The Bliss Leap Award honors companies who have spent the last year truly working towards creating a better company culture and happier employees," said Heidi Golledge, co-founder and CEO of CareerBliss. ??A common thread amongst all our Bliss Leap Award winners is the desire to improve and continue to foster a positive and happier work environment."

All 50 Bliss Leap Award winners appear on the CareerBliss website.

Insight: What If Baby Boomers Don't Live Forever?

By Linda Stern and Susan Heavey
WASHINGTON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - What if the generation that once rocked out to The Who's "hope I die before I get old" line actually does?
Most retirement plans and federal budget projections assume baby boomers -- those Americans born between 1946 and 1964 -- will live significantly longer than their parents have. That is a logical assumption, given healthcare improvements, new drugs and the long 20th century experience of ever-rising life expectancies.
But there is a counter argument: boomers, beset by factors like elevated rates of obesity, cancer and suicide, could reverse or at least slow the increase in human life spans. A change in trend could have a bearing on everything from Social Security trust fund balances to the number of nursing homes and golf courses supported in the future.
"It does not bode well for the baby boom generation at all," says S. Jay Olshansky, a public health professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago who has been studying boomer longevity under a MacArthur Foundation grant.
One new study, led by Rice University professor Justin Denney, concludes that it would be a mistake to project the longevity gains of the last century throughout this one. Yet that is about what the trustees who estimate the future solvency of the U.S. Social Security retirement program have been doing.
Denney notes a "huge increase" of 30 years in U.S. life expectancy from 1900 to the 2000s. But he and fellow researchers see a mere three-year increase over the next 50 years, with improvements in longevity concentrated among the well-to-do, while poorer people will not share in the same benefits.
To be sure, the trajectory of American lifespans is stirring great debate among epidemiologists, actuaries and other experts. Most say mortality will continue to decline and people will live longer. But some experts believe that trend will slow.
MULTIPLE THREATS
"If you look at the health status of the baby boom versus the generation that just preceded them, they are in worse shape," says Olshansky.
"There is a whole suite of problems we are now seeing in the baby boom generation that we didn't see in their parents when they were that age," Olshansky said, citing greater frailty, increased risk for cardiovascular disease and declining cognitive function.
Baby boomers, now between 48 and 67 years old, have already shown a greater propensity to suicide than previous generations, according to a data analysis from researchers at Rutgers University and Emory University.
Male boomers had abnormally high suicide rates in their teen and early 20s, peaking for many boomers at 26 suicides per 100,000 lives at an age when the rate among next older generations were below 20 suicides per 100,000 lives, data showed. Patterns were similar for women, though their rates are lower, Emory epidemiologist Ellen Idler said.
Even more disturbing to Idler is the fact that suicide rates for baby boomers rose significantly when they were in their 40s, a time when those rates typically plateau or head down. "It's a troubling scenario all around." And suicide is not insignificant: Idler says it causes roughly as many deaths in any given year as breast cancer. In 2009, there were 11.8 suicide deaths and 12.5 breast cancer deaths per 100,000 lives, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

THE BIG 'C'
Then there's cancer. The post-war baby boom generation does have higher rates of cancer at younger ages than the previous generation, the National Cancer Institute reported.
In 2009, people 45 to 59 years old saw roughly 570 cases of cancer per 100,000 people. That's up 7 percent from the 533 cases per 100,000 who were in that same age range in 1985.
Some of that increase may be due to better detection, which - along with new treatments - has resulted in fewer cancer deaths for boomers than for their parents generation. Yet epidemiologists also see baby boomer women falling prey to lung, skin and other cancers.
"Boomer women are about the heaviest smoking cohort in U.S. history and they are suffering big time," says Samuel Preston, a professor of sociology and demography at the University of Pennsylvania. Like many of his colleagues, Preston believes that a declining rate of smoking will eventually extend women's life expectancy; however, he isn't projecting that until today's young women turn 40 in 2020.

OBESITY
And what about obesity? It's still not completely clear.
By 2040, obesity will reduce life expectancy by 0.733 percent for men, and 0.677 percent for women, according to Preston. Those are trends that he believes will be offset by other gains as people stop smoking.
Richard Suzman, director of behavioral and social research at the National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Aging, puts it this way: "Obesity is a little more complicated."
So far among boomers serious weight gain appears linked to rising disability and all the costs associated with that, but because of modern medicine's ability to treat complications like diabetes and heart disease, the impact on longevity is there, just not as much, he says.
Additionally, some experts say obesity's true impact on longevity won't be seen until current youth get older since they are more likely to have been obese as children than today's elders.
And Chris Ruhm, a professor of public policy and economics at the University of Virginia, sees another shoe ready to drop: severe obesity. He expects high rates of obesity to be a drag on life expectancy and severe or morbid obesity, even in the baby boom generation, to be a much bigger problem.

'RICH PEOPLE LIVE LONGER'
Even pessimists like Olshansky do not believe that all or even most baby boomers will die at younger ages than their forbears. But he sees a future in which the rate of improvement slows overall and some groups - boomers who are from lower socio-economic strata and are black or Latino - see actual declines.
"Rich people live significantly longer than poor people do," says John Bailey Jones, an associate professor of economics at the University of Albany, State University of New York. In the United States, the wealthy live nearly five years longer on average than do the most destitute, according to Denney's research.
NIH's Suzman sees a "very uneven" picture when it comes to U.S. mortality: "It's a combination of public health, lifestyle and medical treatments, and there are still very large gaps."
Furthermore, people facing economic stress seem to die younger than those who are comfortable, and job loss worries could push more boomers into that low-income, high-stress group with higher death rates than their well-to-do peers, suggests Rice University's Denney.
Many people in developed countries overseas outlive Americans.
Overall those in Japan, Singapore, Canada and even beleaguered Italy and Spain live longer than those in the United States, which ranked 50th in latest CIA World Factbook. Even with that gap, it's important to note that other countries fund their retirement plans differently and face unique distributions of age and wealth.

THE SOCIAL SECURITY MATH
In April, the Social Security board of trustees predicted that the funds that finance the retirement, disability and survivors programs will be exhausted in 2035. At that point, benefits would need to be cut or new funds found. Over the next 75 years, the shortfall in the Old Age, Survivors and Disability (OASDI) fund would amount to 2.67 percent of U.S. payroll.
This projection has triggered much political infighting over whether the United States should be cutting Social Security benefits or raising taxes to pay for them.
But those calculations are based on the expectation that the constant improvements in mortality (fewer deaths at every age) would continue unabated. The trustees project mortality declining by roughly 0.77 percent a year for every year going forward as far as the eye can see.
"We're simply projecting that improvements will occur at roughly the same... (rate) as in the past," Stephen Goss, chief actuary for the Social Security Administration, told Reuters.
The agency's math relies on this assumption: the average 65-year-old in 2020 can be expected to live 19.4 more years if a man and 21.3 more years if a woman. By 2030, when the last baby boomer turns 66, the average 65-year-old woman could expect to live to 87.9 and the average 65-year-old man would live to 86.
What if the trustees are wrong? If mortality rates stopped improving, and remained constant over the next 75 years, that would cut the OASDI actuarial deficit by about 0.45 percent of payroll, about one sixth of the projected shortfall over the next 75 years, a Social Security spokesperson told Reuters. That won't completely save the trust fund from shortfalls, but it would help.
Medicare is trickier to assess, Goss and other experts say.
"The net effect (of slower longevity improvements) might not be large," agrees Ronald Lee, director of University of California, Berkeley's Center for the Demography and Economics of Aging. "There will be fewer elderly people to provide health care for... (but) those elderly people who are alive will be less healthy and have higher healthcare needs."
Some insurance companies selling annuities -- firms like Metlife Inc, Prudential Financial Inc, New York Life Insurance Co and TIAA CREF -- could also benefit.
For individuals planning their futures any surprising shifts in life expectancy really wouldn't change their course. Some children of boomers could inherit money earlier than expected.
Still, retirees will have to manage their money expecting it to last 25, 30 or even 40 years, because no individual could count on being one of the unlucky few dying younger. Keith Moon and John Entwistle -- two of the four original The Who band members -- did indeed die before they got old. But the others -- Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey -- are still going strong.

Lesser Known Ways To Brainstorm For Internet Home Business ...

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) doctrine states that you should always find a keyword that has little to no competition and that has high demand so that you can rise to the top of the search engine results and dominate that particular keyword. The problem with the internet home business area is that many people online are creating new websites with the typical keywords like ?work from home? and ?home business? so as a result it is almost impossible to rise to the top of the search engines or risking having to pay lots of money for pay per click advertising.?

Instead of trying to compete with long established websites in the internet home business niche or high paying pay per click advertisers, this article suggests two ways you can think outside of the box and think of new keywords to promote your internet home business and its products.?

Motivations and the internet business opportunity?

It has been said that if you figure out someone?s motivations well enough, you can determine what he could do. Instead of hitting the ?work at home? keyword when promoting your internet business opportunity, why not instead start thinking of reasons why people would join an internet home business. Reasons such as early retirement, starting part time income, quitting the rat race, getting out of debt come to mind. So if you target the reasons why someone would be interested in an internet business opportunity you are in effect targeting your actual online target audience.?

So what you could do is write articles on these topics, optimize your websites to these topics with links to your internet home business which fit in with these motivations rather than the run of the mill work at home business websites.?

Another way to generate more internet business signups is to hang out at website forums that discuss such things and offer some constructive advice and have a signature that leads to your internet home business website. If people trust your advice on the forums, they are more likely to trust the internet home business that you promote.?

Solve health problems?

Many internet home businesses have as their products health supplements. The reason for this is that such products are consumable and can be consumed monthly. As a result of this, nearly every internet home business owner selling vitamins either floods the Google Adwords with ads promoting vitamins or builds websites promoting vitamins.?

One way around this problem is to find keywords targeting the problem rather than the solution. E.g. Heart attack if you are trying to promote antioxidants. Do some research into the area you are talking about and then either build a website that tells people more information about their health problems or advertise your product via Google Adwords as the solution to such a problem. Your competition may be significantly lower than if you had targeted ?Vitamins? directly. So the lower the competition, the potential more money you might make with regards to product sales.?

In conclusion, always aim to find these niches and once you do, spend time on Search Engine Optimization in addition to PayperClick advertising and you will find that in the longer run you will make more money online that you would have dreamed with your internet home business.??

NEW YORK (AP) ? Chris Brown and Drake were sued Wednesday over a bottle-throwing nightclub brawl involving their entourages, as a company with ties to the club sought to hold the music stars responsible for the melee.

Brown's representatives had no immediate comment about the $16 million lawsuit, and Drake's representatives didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The suit faulted the artists for ? at a minimum ? doing nothing to stop the June 14 melee and said it sullied the chic Manhattan nightspot's name.

Brown and Drake should bear blame for a glass-flinging, broken-bottle-swinging free-for-all in a crowded club "in circumvention of the venue's extensive security measures," says the lawsuit, filed by Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. The company owns the trademark for Greenhouse; the owners of the club itself aren't involved in the lawsuit and declined to comment.

No criminal charges have been filed in the fight, which left Brown, NBA star Tony Parker and others injured. Police say the fracas started after members of Drake's entourage confronted Brown on the dance floor as he was leaving the club's basement lounge, called W.i.P. Drake's representatives have said he was on his way out and didn't injure anyone.

The lawsuit, however, points to news accounts of bad blood between Brown and Drake, both of whom have dated singer Rihanna. Entertainment Enterprises believes the two men instigated, encouraged, or at least failed to stop the fight, lawyer Andrew T. Miltenberg said.

"It's their posse, and they're in charge, and to the extent that they could have controlled or dissipated whatever was going on, we don't believe they did," he said.

Because of publicity about the fight, a $4 million deal to license Greenhouse's name for other clubs around the country fell through, the lawsuit says.

Entertainment Enterprises is headed by a former Greenhouse owner, Jon Bakhshi.

The current owners face suits over the fracas, including a $20 million claim from Parker.

The city shuttered the club for a time after the brawl; Greenhouse reopened July 10. It is continuing to fight a State Liquor Authority effort to nix its liquor license.

Ruling allows CBC to keep streaming free music | iPolitics

Canada?s broadcast regulator has quashed a bid to stop CBC from streaming free music over the Internet.

Private broadcaster Stingray Digital Group Inc. argued the new CBC Music service had an unfair advantage because it is funded by the federal government.

The company, which runs the national pay-music service Galaxie and the online music service Stingray-music.com, also claimed the public broadcaster gets a preferential rate on copyright licence fees.

But the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission dismissed both complaints in a ruling released Tuesday.

?The commission considers that (Stingray Digital Group) has not demonstrated that the CBC has given anyone, including itself, a preference, or that it has subjected anyone to a disadvantage,? the regulator said in its ruling.

CBC launched an online service in February with 40 different web radio stations, on-demand music and live concerts. The public broadcaster says it has streamed more than 7.5 million hours of music since its launch, and thousands of Canadian artists have uploaded more than 130,000 songs to the site.

However, Stingray claimed that what the public broadcaster was doing was not substantially different from what private companies were offering.

?Due to its government funding and preferred copyright treatment, CBC is now positioned ? whether it intends to do so or not ? to harm private enterprise, and to inhibit competition in the online music environment in Canada,? the company said in its CRTC submission.

The company is mulling its next move.

?Stingray is disappointed but we accept the CRTC?s decision,? Stingray said in a statement.

?We will be looking at other options to make sure that the CBC doesn?t use its government funding and other advantages to hurt Canadian business in the dynamic and growing digital marketplace.?

CBC said it welcomed the decision.

?We?re very pleased by today?s decision by the CRTC as CBCMusic.ca plays an important role in supporting Canadian artists across the country and in meeting the needs of Canadians in an ever-evolving digital world,? Chris Boyce, executive director of CBC Radio and Audio, said in a statement.

Watch Out PayPal: Competitor WePay Drops Prices, Rolls Out White Label Payments API

wepay-blue-background-512Online payments startup WePay is today announcing lowered pricing and new API features, as it celebrates the one-year anniversary of its WePay Payments API. The company, which is backed by $19.2 million in venture funding, is actually a bit older than just one year, however. As you may remember, WePay first emerged from Y Combinator in 2009 as a simple tool to collecting group payments. The company has since grown beyond group payments, and even beyond payments themselves, with added support for event registration and ticketing, custom invoicing, donations and online stores. But the WePay Payments API remains a key piece to the company's business, enabling merchants and individuals to integrate WePay's service in their own websites and applications. This allows them to accept payments without the need for a pre-existing merchant account. Today, the API accounts for roughly 25% of WePay's business.

Monday Morning SEO - The Unexpected and the Extreme

I have a morning ritual that I like to follow most workdays. I like to stop for breakfast at one of the nearby coffee houses or bakeries and sit down with a newspaper, some coffee, and something to eat, and spend some time talking with some of my neighbors. Seems like many of them are older, and while I get some questions about things like how to reduce the amount of email spam they received, I usually learn more in those conversations than I?d ever imagined.

The Red Truck Bakery in Warrenton, Virginia

One couple has been active in the local community for decades, and have been sharing details with me about local history. They?re also world travelers, and are off to Paris for a couple of weeks now. I?ve been getting a number of questions from them about how to publish ebooks because they want to share some family history about a Texas ranger and the taming of the old west.

Another is a retired school administrator who remembers the evolution of computers in education from punch cards through PCs, and was a high school sports coach. And another of my neighbors is a retired electrical engineer who started filing patents about 40 years ago, and holds some really interesting ones, including some for very high speed scanning of documents.

So when I read Joel Runyon?s An Unexpected Ass Kicking, I wasn?t surprised about his chance encounter with someone who had helped create the technology that he was writing on. You just never know who the people around you might be unless you strike up a conversation, and actually listen.

Some Search Posts I Liked From Last Week

One of the most popular publishing platforms on the Web these days is WordPress, and while it comes out of the box pretty SEO friendly, there are a number of tweaks and changes you can make to it to make it even better. Dan Shure published a helpful post on the use of Tags in WordPress that everyone using the software should read, in Let?s Get Real: This is what your WordPress Tags Are Like

If you?re concerned about attracting and acquiring links to your pages, there?s another post from last week that I recommend highly. Ross Hudgens shares his thoughts with us in How to Scale Your Link Building, in which he discusses scalable Link Building and Passive link acquisition. It?s always interesting to me to gain some insight into the practices that some people use when it comes to SEO, and Ross provides some very interesting insights in his methods to draw links to his site.

Google has been more transparent in recent months with news of the many updates it makes to its ranking algorithms, but didn?t publish a list of updates that it made to its search results in July for the month of June. I was afraid that they may have decided to stop showing us something about those updates.

Fortunately, the Google Inside Search Blog made up for things with an omnibus collection of updates titled Search quality highlights: 86 changes for June and July. I?m still digging through those. While they point to many new updates and changes, the ones that stand out to me so far describe updates to how Google may handle Universal Search.

Another announcement at Google on some changes include a change to Knowledge Graph results, the inclusion of GMail results in Google?s web search results, and better Voice Search results. The post is Building the search engine of the future, one baby step at a time

A little frightening was the post Extreme Negative SEO: Know Your Vulnerabilities from Kristine Schachinger at Search Engine Watch, which described some ways that people might attack our websites that go far beyond pointing lots of links to them from questionable domains and bad neighborhoods.

It reminded me of the broken gas pipe I saw recently on a walk down Main Street in my town. I hope the nightmares the post has been causing me stop sometime soon.

I decided to take the plunge, and get a new phone this weekend so that I can better keep on top of mobile search. The phone has one of the latest versions of Android running on it, and is rumored to be one of the first to be upgraded to Google?s Jelly Bean platform release. In Speech Recognition and Deep Learning, we?re told that Jelly Bean will enable us to talk directly to a neural network trained to recognize our speech. I?m excited to discover whether or not this neural network will be a match for Apple?s Siri.

I haven?t been including any links to whitepapers from the search engines in these Monday Morning SEO posts, and I want to make up for that in the future of I can. One that came out from Microsoft this morning is Anticipatory Search: Using Context to Initiate Search (pdf). Just how, and how well does a search engine anticipate the context of a search before returning results?

Retro Corner:

For today?s retro corner, I have a couple of posts to share with you. The first reminded me of old news clips from the days of Walter Cronkite. I was brought back to when I first ran into and recognized Rand Fishkin at a conference, by the color of his shoes:
Rand Fishkin?s Yellow Shoes, the Truth Revealed:

When you?re conducting keyword research, one of the questions that?s important to ask is how appropriate the keywords you are looking at might fit in page titles, in headings, in the body of pages, and in anchor text pointing to those pages.

Good anchor text not only contains the keywords you?re interested in, or very related terms, but it also acts as navigation that encourages people to click upon links, and have some idea or confidence about what they might find on the other side of those links.

A paper that I came across years ago has helped influence my decisions about choosing link text, and it?s worth digging up for another look. Jared Spool?s Getting Confidence From Lincoln describes how the right words within links can make it a lot easier for people to navigate through a website and find what they are looking for on its pages. A snippet from the article:

Some very clear link attributes immediately jumped out at us. First, users expect to find ?trigger words? in the links. A trigger word is a word (or phrase) that causes the user to click. When the trigger words match the user?s goals, they find those words right away and the links make them more confident that they are going to find their content.

I?ve been looking for keywords that also are very effective trigger words ever since.
