(AP) ? Emerging markets are playing a bigger role in Procter & Gamble Co.'s growth, in another sign that U.S. companies are courting new customers overseas as American shoppers get tapped out.

The maker of Tide laundry detergent, Crest toothpaste and Pampers diapers said Friday that its market value grew 9 percent in developing countries over the latest quarter, but just 2 percent in North America and 0.5 percent in Western Europe. That news came as P&G reported a 49 percent drop in profit for the second fiscal quarter, hobbled by higher costs for materials and a big write-down on the value of two of its business units.

Developing markets like Africa and parts of Latin America and Asia now make up almost 37 percent of P&G's sales, up from 27 percent five years ago. That growth was buoyed by recent expansions like toothpaste offerings in Nigeria and fabric softener in Indonesia. In the same period, the share of sales that P&G makes in the U.S. dropped to 37 percent from 43 percent.

"We are shifting the footprint of the company to take advantage of the growth where the growth occurs," CEO Bob McDonald said in a call with analysts.

He noted that P&G has closed technical centers in Western Europe and North America but recently broke ground on a new center in Singapore and doubled the size of another in Beijing. Of the roughly 19 plants the company had under construction in the last six months, only one was in the U.S.

That adaptability has helped P&G gain revenue no matter the economic climate in the U.S., McDonald said. For example, while some competitors have blamed slowing diaper sales on a drop in the U.S. birth rate, P&G has focused on selling baby products to fast-growing populations in Asia. P&G's baby care revenue rose 6 percent in the quarter, while overall revenue rose 4 percent.

The globally focused strategy isn't without challenges. In some cases, P&G has to convince a new crop of customers that they need a product they'd previously lived without, like disposable diapers. The products sold in places like Africa and Latin America are usually lower cost, which means they typically carry lower profit margins.

But P&G also is keenly aware of the fragility of recession-weary customers in the U.S. and Western Europe. This quarter, it took big write-downs on the value of its salon professional unit and the appliances unit, which mostly sells electric razors.

The company noted that discretionary purchases are a tougher sell in a weak economy. It also noted that Western Europe, where concerns about a debt crisis are crimping consumer confidence, accounts for about half the sales for both units.

P&G is also raising prices across the globe to make up for its own higher costs for many raw materials like alcohol and the resin used in making diapers. In the last quarter, it raised prices an average of 4 percent.

P&G knows it must proceed carefully or risk driving away customers. In the last earnings call, it said the higher prices hurt its market share in Western Europe and North America.

But Friday, executives sounded more optimistic. They said more competitors were following suit and raising their prices as well, which should stem any loss of market share. For example, Colgate-Palmolive Co. announced Thursday it had raised prices in North America after more than two years of cutting them.

Stifel Nicolaus analyst Mark Astrachan, who described the quarter as "not a terrible result," said P&G should lower prices in some categories to gain back lost market share.

McDonald said P&G closely watches whether other companies follow its price increases, and if they don't, "then we react to resume the value equation we had when we were growing share."

P&G also noted that, like other U.S. companies that do business in foreign markets, it is no longer benefiting from favorable foreign currency exchanges. When the dollar is weak, as it was for much of last year, revenue a company raises overseas translates into more dollars when converted at headquarters. But now, many foreign currencies are slipping.

As a result, P&G lowered its per-share earnings estimate for the fiscal year, to $4 to $4.10 per share from $4.15 to $4.33.

For the quarter, net income fell 49 percent, to $1.69 billion from $3.33 billion, on the higher materials costs and the write-downs of the appliance business and the salon business. But after stripping out the one-time charges like the write-downs, net income was $1.10 per share, beating the $1.07 predicted by analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue grew 4 percent to $22.1 billion, helped by the higher prices. That was roughly in line with analysts' expectations.

P&G's stock fell half a percent at mid-day to $64.45.

The Bachelor's Monica Snipes: Ben and Courtney "Deserve Each Other" (omg!)

The Bachelor's Monica Snipes: Ben and Courtney "Deserve Each Other"

If you ask eliminated contestant Monica Spannbauer, The Bachelor's Ben Flajnik and contestant Courtney Robertson are a match made in reality TV heaven -- but not for the reasons viewers may think.

PHOTOS: Reality TV's most shocking love stories

"I absolutely think she's wrong for Ben, but the more I watch the show -- because obviously I don't get to see everything that happens -- they deserve each other," Spannbauer told reporters Thursday of the 28-year-old model, who has made a nasty habit of hating on the other girls in the house while pursuing Flajnik.

VIDEO: Courtney flirts with Ben during their fly fishing date

While Spannbauer admits she never personally had a problem with her while in the Bachelor mansion, she understands how Robertson's evil behavior has rubbed viewers the wrong way.

"Courtney is not very nice and I think she deserves everything that's coming toward her," the ousted bachelorette sniped. "Hands down, I think she's somebody different around other women and somebody different around a man."

PHOTOS: Meet Bachelor Ben's sexy singles

Spannbauer admits she also thinks differently of ABC's bachelor after watching his interactions with Robertson.

"[Courtney] is really manipulative and really good at what she does. Obviously that's the kind of girl Ben's looking for, at least to this point," she said. "If they end up together, they deserve each other, because if he's that shallow and she's that manipulative, then they totally work together."

Common explains feud with Drake (AP)

PARK CITY, Utah ? The Sundance Film Festival became the unlikely center of hip-hop's latest feud when actor-turned-rapper Drake and rapper-turned-actor Common came to town.

Common was promoting his role in upcoming family drama "LUV," while Drake was performing at one of the many late-night parties.

The two have traded insults recently via their raps, but Common said he didn't want to say anything else about Drake not in rhyme form.

"I feel like I said everything I really needed to say on the record. I just looked at it as like `Hey, it's just a hip-hop battle,'" he explained in an interview this week.

"The time to talk is on record as far as I'm concerned. If we in the ring, then we just handle our business in the ring."

Common had the most recent entry into the battle, by adding his verse to a Rick Ross song and naming Drake directly ? a move that the Chicago native said he felt obligated to make.

"Ice Cube, when he was going at N.W.A., once he left N.W.A., you knew who it was. Jay-Z and Nas ? Jay-Z said, `Smarten up, Nas.' And you just knew. Cats would say names," he continued.

"So that's just the way that I feel like you've got to do it. I don't want to like leave anything _I don't want anybody else to think I'm talking about them. I want you to know, `Hey this is who I'm talking to.'"

Common, known more lately for his acting than his rapping, started the battle with a song called "Sweet" on his new album, "The Dreamer/The Believer."

"He (Drake) felt offended by it. And the song is really discussing how hip-hop has a softer side," said Common.

"And I made it clear that I'm not talking about anyone specifically. For me it was no different than when Jay-Z addressed with `DOA,' he was talking about Auto-Tune. I was talking about, `Hey, you know hip-hop is starting to become more just saturated with softer songs,'" he said. "And I don't see anything the matter actually with the love songs. I do love songs. So I don't see anything the matter with it, but when the music becomes saturated with it, I mean, I speak up. I love hip-hop music."

The festival continues through Sunday.

Protest exposes Silicon Valley-Hollywood rivalry (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? In a move that heightens the growing tension between Silicon Valley and Hollywood, Wikipedia and other websites went dark Wednesday in protest of two congressional proposals intended to thwart the online piracy of copyrighted movies and TV programs.

The web-based encyclopedia is part of a loose coalition of dot-coms and large technology companies that fear Congress is prepared to side with Hollywood and enact extreme measures ? possibly including the blocking of entire websites_ to stop the online sharing and unauthorized use of Hollywood productions.

The fight will test which California-based industry has the most sway in Washington.

For now, Silicon Valley appears to have the upper hand. Supporters of the legislation ? called the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House and the Protect Intellectual Property Act in the Senate ? say the bills are aimed at protecting jobs in the movie and music industries. But a campaign including tech heavyweights such as Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. has successfully portrayed the bills as an attack on a free and open Internet.

"It has nothing to do with stolen songs or movies," said Justin Ruben, executive director of MoveOn.org, which is participating in the blackout. Ruben says tougher legislation ? even directed overseas ? could make domestic cultural commentators more prone to legal attack.

Rather than showing encyclopedia articles, Wikipedia displayed a blacked-out page describing the protest and offering more information on the bills. Many articles were still viewable on cached pages.

Reddit.com shut down its social news service for 12 hours. Other sites made their views clear without cutting off services. Google blacked out the logo on its home page, directing people to a page where they could add their names to a petition.

The one-day outage was timed to coincide with key House and Senate committee hearings as they prepare to send the bills to the full floor for debate.

However, sponsor Rep. Lamar Smith, a Texas Republican, sought last week to remove a controversial provision from the House bill that could force Internet service providers to interfere with the way Web addresses work for foreign sites deemed dedicated to piracy. He postponed work on the measure until February.

Critics believe such tinkering with core Internet technology treads into dangerous territory that could lead to online censorship. It might also give hackers a new way to wreak havoc.

The White House raised concerns that the bills could stifle innovation. Over the weekend, the Obama administration reacted to two online petitions, saying it "will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet."

At the same time, the administration called on all sides to "pass sound legislation this year that provides prosecutors and rights holders new legal tools to combat online piracy originating beyond U.S. borders."

That nuanced stance is President Barack Obama's attempt at "threading the needle" between two important constituencies as he seeks re-election in November, said Jeffrey Silva, a technology policy analyst at Medley Global Advisors in Washington.

On the one hand, his administration has defended a free, open Internet as it watched repressive regimes fall in the Middle East with help from social media such as Twitter. It has also been a proponent of the concept of "net neutrality," which prevents Internet service providers from slowing online traffic that comes from file-sharing sites known to trade in pirated content.

On the other hand, Obama and other Democrats have gone to Hollywood dozens of times to raise campaign funds over the years.

"The administration is trying to fight to protect the Internet space," Silva said. "But at the same time, it doesn't want to disenfranchise Hollywood and the business community."

Indeed, behind the protests and public posturing, both Hollywood and Silicon Valley spend generously to lobby causes in Washington. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the movie, television and music industries spent a combined $91.7 million on lobbying efforts in 2011, compared with the computer and Internet industry's $93 million.

In the 2012 election cycle, the movie, television and music industry offered up $7.7 million in direct campaign contributions to congressional candidates. The computer and Internet industry contributed $6.6 million.

Despite the uproar on websites and blogs, PIPA remains firmly in play. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy said Tuesday that he intends to push the bill toward a floor vote on Jan. 24. He said much of the criticism of the bill is "flatly wrong."

But amid the high-tech campaign against the bills, several lawmakers came out in opposition. At least three Senate Republicans who had previously cosponsored the Senate bill ? Orrin Hatch of Utah, Roy Blunt of Missouri and John Boozman of Arkansas ? issued statements Wednesday saying they were withdrawing their support.

It remains to be seen whether the two industries can come to the table and negotiate a compromise.

"There are good companies, and then there are companies simply out to preserve the Wild West, free-to-steal business model," said Recording Industry Association of America CEO Cary Sherman. He expects to know "within the next few weeks" whether the legislation can survive.

Lawmakers may have a personal incentive to keep online piracy on the nation's political radar, said Fred Wertheimer, president of Democracy 21, a non-partisan government-accountability watchdog. If the issue stays alive through the current election cycle, it may help bring in campaign contributions from high-tech donors and Hollywood later this year.

The issue "becomes an opportunity for raising more money from these groups," Wertheimer said. "If you're into an important issue and money is flowing in on both sides, then both sides can up the ante."

A look at key moments in the SC GOP debate (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Some notable moments from the Republican presidential hopefuls' debate Monday in Myrtle Beach, S.C.:

___

From the frontrunner:

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney used the debate to defend his record as a venture capitalist. Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry, Romney's rivals, have portrayed him as a corporate fat cat whose company, Bain Capital, made a fortune while thousands of employees lost their jobs.

Asked whether the results of Bain's successes show a flaw in the business model or are just the rough and tumble of capitalism, Romney said he believes free enterprise works and ultimately improves the economy.

"Every time we invested, we tried to grow an enterprise, add jobs to make it more successful," Romney said. "The record is pretty darn good."

___

Releasing tax forms:

Romney said he'd be "happy" to release his tax forms and suggested he would do so around April if he is the party's presidential nominee.

"I've heard enough from folks saying, `Look, let's see your tax records.' I have nothing in them that suggests there's any problem and I'm happy to do so," Romney said.

"If I become our nominee, and what's happened in history is people have released them in about April of the coming year, and that's probably what I would do."

Perry called on Romney to release his tax forms soon, as other candidates had. The public, Perry added, has a right to know how Romney earned his money, adding "We can't fire our nominee in September. We need to know now."

___

Gingrich on his positive campaign promise:

Romney's super PAC spent more than $3 million in attack ads, which Gingrich said left him the option to either "unilaterally disarm" and leave the race or "at least bring up your competitor's record."

Asked why he was criticizing Romney's success in a way that Democrats might, Gingrich replied:

"I don't think Republicans should allow themselves to automatically be intimidated because every time you raise a question somebody yells, `You are doing something the Democrats will do.'"

___

Sharp disagreements over indefinite detention:

President Barack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act that would allow indefinite detention of some terror suspects. Many civil liberties activists believe the law is unconstitutional.

Romney said he would have signed the law and insisted it was "appropriate" to detain American members of al-Qaida. Romney called membership in the group "treason" and said the U.S. government has the right to impose indefinite detention.

Santorum said a U.S. citizen who is detained as an enemy combatant should have the right to a lawyer and to appeal their case before a federal court.

Paul said holding American citizens indefinitely is a breach of the U.S. judicial system.

(AP) ? The captain of a grounded cruise ship is heard in a recording making excuses as an Italian coast guard official repeatedly orders him to get back on his crippled ship.

In a telephone conversation, the official berates the captain, who is on a lifeboat and repeatedly says he doesn't want to return to the ship even as passengers are still being evacuated. The ship struck a rock Friday evening and capsized.

The officer tells Francesco Schettino to reboard and assess the needs of passengers: "It is an order. Don't make any more excuses."

Schettino is finally heard agreeing to reboard. It is unclear whether he did.

Schettino has been jailed for investigation of manslaughter, abandoning ship and causing a shipwreck.

2 road accidents in China kill 14 people (AP)

BEIJING ? Two road accidents in China have killed 14 people in one day.

The official Xinhua News Agency says seven people were killed and another five injured when the bus they were traveling in crashed with a trailer in eastern Anhui province. The accident happened Saturday in a rural area.

Later on Saturday, seven people were killed when the van they were in fell off a cliff in southwest Yunnan province. Xinhua said Sunday that the vehicle had been hit from behind by another van.

Serious traffic accidents are common in China due to often overloaded vehicles and poorly trained drivers who often ignore traffic laws.

South Carolina Debate: Republican Candidates Face Off (LIVE UPDATES)

HuffPost's Howard Fineman reports:

South Carolina is the home of anti-federal sentiment going back to the 1820s, and the birthplace of the modern, Southern-based GOP thanks to figures like Strom Thurmond, Roger Milliken and Lee Atwater.

The state is to modern Republicanism what Mecca is to Islam: a holy place of its founding history, feuds, orthodoxy and authority.

Before 1980, South Carolina had selected its delegates by convention, a suitably elitist and tightly-controlled situation for local Republicans. But seeking an early boost in what had become a Southern-based party, Reagan operatives and loyalists engineered the switch to a primary system. Reagan won in 1980 and was on his way to the White House.

A win now by Romney -- a Yankee, a relative moderate, an Ivy Leaguer and a Mormon -- would be the ratification he desperately needs from voters who, so far, still regard him with mere tolerance at best and deep antagonism and suspicion at worst.

To be sure, Romney can still slog on to the nomination if he loses South Carolina. The Florida primary, ten days later, is a mega-state event in which only he and Ron Paul have the in-house resources to compete.

But losing the Palmetto State, given its history and what is likely to be a big turnout, would reinforce a narrative Romney can ill-afford: that he's a likely nominee by default, resented and unloved.

Editor: Hacking might have occurred at 2nd tabloid (AP)

LONDON ? The editor of Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper told a media ethics inquiry Monday it is possible illegal phone hacking took place at the tabloid, which was edited for almost a decade by CNN celebrity interviewer Piers Morgan.

The editor of sister title the Sunday Mirror told the same tribunal that she couldn't be sure illicit eavesdropping hadn't gone on there, too ? but the papers' publisher said the company had no plans to launch an internal investigation into possible wrongdoing.

Mirror editor Richard Wallace had told the inquiry earlier that hacking "might well" have been going on at the Mirror in the early 2000s.

But he said he had no knowledge of it and insisted "ethical issues are embedded" within the culture of the paper's newsroom.

The judge-led inquiry into press standards was set up in the wake of revelations that Rupert Murdoch's now-shuttered News of the World had illegally eavesdropped on the voice mails of celebrities, politicians and even crime victims in its quest for scoops. Some alleged victims have accused other newspapers outside the Murdoch empire of wrongdoing, too.

Comments made by Morgan have raised suspicions that phone hacking may have been going on while he was in charge of the Daily Mirror.

Morgan told an earlier session of the inquiry that he didn't believe he ever listened to hacked voicemail messages while he was editor between 1995 and 2004.

Morgan told the committee his earlier comment that "loads of newspaper journalists were doing it" was based on rumor and hearsay.

But Morgan refused to explain how he had heard a voicemail message left by former Beatle Paul McCartney on the phone message system of McCartney's now ex-wife Heather Mills.

Morgan's description of the message in a 2006 article for the Daily Mail led some to wonder whether he'd obtained it through phone hacking. Mills has said there was no way Morgan could have obtained it honestly.

Wallace, who took over as editor after Morgan was fired in 2004 for running faked pictures of British soldiers allegedly abusing Iraqis, said he had never heard that message.

He acknowledged "it's possible" that phone hacking was the source of a 2002 story on the romantic life of Sven-Goran Eriksson, then England's national soccer coach.

Tina Weaver, editor of the Sunday Mirror, was asked about a BBC report that claimed phone hacking had gone on "pretty much every day" for a period at the newspaper.

"I don't believe it to be true," she said, but admitted the BBC's claim had never been internally investigated.

Sly Bailey, chief executive of the newspaper's publisher, Trinity Mirror PLC, acknowledged that after a News of the World reporter and a private investigator were arrested for phone hacking in 2006, "lots of journalists were speculating" about the extent of similar wrongdoing at other tabloids.

But she said that at the Mirror titles "there was no evidence and we saw no reason to investigate."

And she said she didn't plan to investigate now.

"I don't think it's the way to run a healthy organization, to go around conducting investigations when there is no evidence," Bailey said.

The still-unfolding hacking scandal has sparked the resignations of several top Murdoch executives, senior police officers and Prime Minister David Cameron's spin doctor, a former News of the World editor.

The inquiry, led by judge Brian Leveson, is hearing this week from editors of daily newspapers and celebrity magazines including Hello! and OK!

Separately, Britain's Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke suggested journalists may be justified in using illegal practices such as phone hacking, if they are exposing an "extreme wrong" and told a committee of lawmakers that reporters should not be prosecuted for using illegal methods, if the stories they are reporting are in the wider public interest

"There are some cases where journalists are justified in going to the limits," Clarke said. "Normally I do not think they should obtain stories by bribery, by blackmail or by phone-tapping... Just occasionally they do that because they are investigating extreme wrong."

He pointed to the exposure of lawmaker expense scandals and cricket spot-fixing by journalists as cases where it's possible illegal tactics were used to gather information.

"I don't know how they got the information about the House of Commons expenses, but it is quite possible that they bribed somebody to get hold of the information," Clarke said. "I really don't know that. It was a very good thing that it was got from somewhere and the public interest was being served."

China's Wen presses Saudi Arabia for oil access

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao pressed Saudi Arabia to open its huge oil and gas resources to expanded Chinese investment, media reports said on Sunday against a backdrop of growing tension over Iran and worries over its crude exports to the Asian power.

The Saudi kingdom is China's biggest source of imported oil, and securing energy security was high on Wen's agenda in Riyadh, in part reflecting concerns about how nuclear tensions and sanctions could unsettle ties with Iran.

"China and Saudi Arabia are both in important stages of development, and there are broad prospects for enhancing cooperation," Wen on Saturday told Prince Nayef, who is a senior member of the Saudi government, according to Xinhua.

"Both sides must strive together to expand trade and cooperation, upstream and downstream, in crude oil and natural gas," said Wen, referring to access to extracting oil and gas and then processing the them.

The Xinhua report made no mention of any discussion of Iran, whose oil exports to China face pressure from new U.S. sanctions. The U.S. sanctions threat is a particular worry for China, the biggest buyer of Iranian oil. Only Saudi Arabia and Angola sell it more crude.

"Beijing is concerned with the potential response to Iranian bellicose statements and with the spike in oil prices that would ensue from greater turmoil in Syria and Iran," Michal Meidan, an analyst in London with the Eurasia Group who studies Chinese energy investment and policy, said in an emailed research note.

Late on Saturday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry denounced U.S. punishment of China's state-run Zhuhai Zhenrong Corp.

On Thursday, the Obama administration invoked U.S. law to sanction Zhuhai Zhenrong Corp, which it said was Iran's largest supplier of refined petroleum products.

"Imposing sanctions on a Chinese company based on a domestic (U.S.) law is totally unreasonable, and does not conform to the spirit or content of U.N. Security Council resolutions about the Iran nuclear issue," the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said in a statement issued on the ministry's website (www.mfa.gov.cn).

"China expresses its strong dissatisfaction and adamant opposition," said Liu.

The Obama administration said its sanctions against the Chinese company and two other firms are part of a broadening effort to target Iran's energy sector and press Tehran to curb in its nuclear ambitions, which Western governments say appear aimed at developing the means to make atomic weapons.

Iran says its nuclear activities are legitimate and entirely for peaceful ends.

China cut oil imports from Iran in January and February in a commercial dispute over contract terms, and has been looking for alternative supplies.

Yet China is unlikely to dramatically boost crude imports from Saudi Arabia, even with the Iranian worries, said Meidan, the analyst with the Eurasia Group.

"In the likely event that Iran will offer discounted oil, Chinese traders will buy more Iranian barrels and could consequently reduce their Saudi imports," she said.

"Wen will therefore need to convey both commercial and diplomatic realities to Saudi Arabia, China's number one source of crude imports, and ensure that bilateral ties remain on steady footing."

MORE TRADE TOO, PLEASE

Wen also said his government wants "strong and reputable" Chinese companies to invest in Saudi Arabia's ports, railways and infrastructure, the Chinese Xinhua news agency reported.

China and Saudi Arabia should keep deepening cooperation "in the face of changeable and complicated regional and international trends," he said, according to Xinhua.

Crown Prince Nayef is King Abdullah's half brother and became heir to the throne in October. The Xinhua report paraphrased the prince as saying that Saudi Arabia is willing to expand cooperation in energy and infrastructure.

China is already Saudi Arabia's biggest customer and the kingdom is keen to diversify its economic ties.

On Saturday, the state-run Saudi oil giant Aramco and Chinese companies finalized an initial agreement signed last year to develop a 400,000 barrel per day (bpd) refinery in Yanbu, on the kingdom's Red Sea coast.

Aramco will hold a 62.5 percent stake in the joint venture formed to develop Yanbu Aramco Sinopec Refining Co (YASREF), and Sinopec will own the rest.

In the first 11 months of 2011, top supplier Saudi Arabia shipped 45.5 million tons of crude to China, a rise of 12.9 percent over the same period in 2010, according to Chinese customs data. Angola and Iran were China's second and third biggest suppliers.

Wen is also scheduled to visit the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

Wing City: Skyfall

Academia Everia

(Post co-written by RedRaine, Arrow and Ylanne)

Lucas let out a long drawn breath as the platform of earth underneath him slowed to crawl; although the Everian mage had plenty of magical reserves to draw from, the extensive travel to and from the Academy was starting to show its effects on him. Reaching the massive gate that seperated Everia from the rest of the world, Lucas allowed his earthen method of travel to finally sink back into the ground as he pushed himself off the ground.

The guards at said gate, recognizing Lucas, waved him to pass on through. In response however, the young man raised his hand, revealing the note Van had given to him just an hour before.

"Have either of you seen Scarlet of Celestia? I have a message." He said loudly, addressing the pair of guards in question. With a mention that Scarlet should be in her main tent, Lucas nodded towards the guards and briskly walked over to her main tent.

Pushing aside one of the tent flaps, Lucas was slightly surprised to find Scarlet talking to a rather familiar looking girl. Despite closer inspection, he just wasn't able to pinpoint where he met her before.

Striding up to the main desk of it, Lucas stood before Scarlet with his arms crossed, the note clutched between his index and middle fingers.

"I've got a message for you." He spoke rather carefully, keeping an eye on the girl standing beside him.

Scarlet raised an eyebrow as Lucas swept into the tent unannounced, meeting his eyes quizzically as the young man folded his arms. "Lucas..?" she began before he spoke, shooting Amira - who was there in conversation with her - an apologetic glance.

When Lucas did speak, Scarlet's eyes fell on the note in his hand. "I trust this is important, considering you didn't knock." Knocking on tent flaps was hardly effective, but 'knocking' had become a pseudonym for the various methods the mages had developed for announcing their presence less feebly than flapping their hands against fabric, ranging from hanging little bells outside the tents to using magic to simulate a proper knocking noise.

"Can't promise that it is, but considering it was passed on in secret, I'm willing to bet on it." Lucas said as he places the note onto Scarlet's desk and sliding it towards her.

Scarlet glanced over the message with a furrowing brow, her eyes narrowing as she examined Van's crude drawing at the bottom. "I recognise that mark," she said, "It was on everything .. at the battle, shit."

Stuffing the note in her pocket, Scarlet grabbed her scepter from beside her desk, "Lucas, meet me at the front gates in five." she instructed, before turning to Amira, "Silviana told me you wanted to help us. Here's your chance. I'm going to round up any soldiers I can quickly, and head out. You with me?"

With a curt nod Lucas set out from the tent, sighing as soon as he felt the cool winter breeze hit him as he left. Clenching a small fist, Lucas made his way quickly to the front gates despite having a five minute window before he was needed.

Amira's hesitation lasted less than a second before she gave Scarlet a quick nod. "As long as you explain on the way," she said with a somber expression. "I'd rather not head into the unknown, if possible." Her fingers fumbled to find the familiar shape of her own wand beneath her clothing, and the tension in her shoulders lessened slightly upon resting her fingers over it.

Scarlet nodded, waving a hand to gesture for Amira to follow. She pointed to one of the mages outside, "You, get me Rose and Kiriel, and ask Kiriel to bring any of her troops she can spare. Tell them that it's an urgent matter of grave importance, and to meet me at the front gate. If you see any of our other new arrivals, let them know too. Quickly now!" she instructed sharply, sending the man running off at top speed.

As she and Amira made their way towards the gates, Scarlet explained the reason for their abrupt departure. "One of my ex-students, a young man named Van, sent a message with Lucas. Apparently they've found a young woman with the mark of the Orsa upon her body. He doesn't know what the mark is though, so he doesn't know the danger he's in. We need to get there as fast as we can to help him. Once again, I find myself the cavalry."

CES 2012 sets all-time records for attendance, exhibitors and claimed floor space

CES 2013 has already been scheduled (it's January 8 - 11, for those curious), and it'll have new records to break once things get going again. A source close to the CEA informed us today that CES 2012 has broken a trifecta of records already, and the final tallies aren't even in yet. For starters, more people attended CES this year than ever before. That's people who actually showed up and claimed a badge -- not just those who registered and flaked -- with the final figure already confirmed to be upward of 153,000. That trumps the 152,203 that arrived in Las Vegas back in 2006, as well as the 149,529 that hit the ground here last year.

Furthermore, a record amount of exhibition space was claimed, with 1.86 million net square feet used this year; the prior record was set in 2008 when 1.857 million net square feet were claimed. Finally, a new record was set when looking at the total number of exhibitors, with over 3,100 outfits checking in this go 'round. The prior record? 3,072, which was set in 2008. There's no question that CES felt busier than ever for us this year, and now we've got the numbers to prove our suspicions -- naturally, we're already mentally gearing up for CES 2013. We'll be here, and hopefully so will you.

P.S. - You can relive our CES 2012 coverage right here in our hub!

Gigabyte's CES 2012 lineup: tablets, laptops and netvertibles, oh my!

Gigabyte's CES suite is something of an alternate universe. It's a place where Ultrabooks and ICS tablets don't exist, and Windows 7 slates, netvertibles and dockable systems are the norm. On display, of course, you'll find the S1081 Windows 7 tablet ($649), a refresh of the S1080 that steps up to a Cedar Trail CPU and adds an HDMI port in the process, but otherwise has the same specs and design. That'll land sometime this quarter. That netvertible of the nostalgic '90s variety would be the 10-inch T1006M, which has Cedar Trail innards, 2GB of RAM, a 320GB or 500GB HDD and is "3.5G-ready." Availability details are hazy, as Gigabyte can't specify timing until Intel reveals when Cedar Trail will ship. Suffice to say, Gigabyte expects it to hit the US this quarter.

Other than that, the fare on display includes previously announced models just making their way to the states. These include the Booktop M2432 ($1,049 and up), a 14-inch, Core i5-powered laptop that can be plugged into a dock loaded with NVIDIA's desktop-grade GT 440 GPU. The M2432, meanwhile, is a more imposing sort of machine, with a 15.6-inch, 1080p display, Blu-ray drive, 750GB 7,200RPM HDD and Core i7 CPU paired with a 2GB GeForce GT555M card. Lastly, there's the dockable T1132N tablet ($1,169), which looks awfully familiar.

All told, we found ourselves primarily gravitating toward the Booktop, whose GPU-in-a-dock reminds us of the Sony VAIO Z, only with desktop-grade graphics, and without the skinny laptop to go with it. We also looked twice at the T1006M, just because convertibles seem to be having their moment, though if you've seen the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga's 1600 x 900 IPS display, Gigabyte's entry seems common. Other than that, we were too busy taking photos of all the gear. Obviously.

Woman, 73, forced to rob bank with ankle bomb

Authorities were searching Monday for man suspected of holding a 73-year-old woman and her husband hostage at their home, then forcing her to try to rob a bank with what she thought was a bomb strapped to her ankle.

The woman, Betty Davis, told employees at the bank in Fayetteville about the device, and authorities were able to safely evacuate the building on Monday before a bomb squad could remove it from Davis' leg, police said. Authorities were testing the device to see if it really was dangerous.

Davis told police that a man had been holding her and her husband captive in their Washington County home, and sheriff's deputies dispatched there found her husband tied up but unharmed. Authorities didn't release Davis' husband's name.

The couple's pickup truck was missing, and Fayetteville TV station KHOG reported Monday evening that sheriff's deputies found an abandoned truck believed to be the couple's.

The couple could only vaguely describe the suspect as a white male of an indeterminate age who was wearing blue jeans.

Washington County sheriff's Lt. Emily Augustine said Monday night that investigators believe the couple's story.

"The evidence we have supports the witness statements so far," Augustine said.

Fayetteville police spokesman Sgt. Craig Stout told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that Davis was cooperative and didn't show any signs of deception.

Fayetteville is in northwest Arkansas and is about 140 miles northwest of Little Rock.

Did seasonal hiring inflate the strong jobs report?

Unemployment figures are adjusted for seasonal hiring, but high numbers of courriers and messengers (a result of increased online shopping) may have had a bigger effect on the numbers.

The BLS noted something a little unusual in the jobs report data from yesterday, and it got me thinking about how seasonal employment patterns are evolving over time.

Skip to next paragraph Jared Bernstein

?

Before joining the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities as a senior fellow, Jared was chief economist to Vice President Joseph Biden and executive director of the White House Task Force on the Middle Class. He is a contributor to MSNBC and CNBC and has written numerous books, including 'Crunch: Why Do I Feel So Squeezed?'

Recent posts

There was a 42,000 spike in the number of couriers/messengers last month, and the Bureau pointed out ?that seasonal hiring was particularly strong in December. This may reflect increased online purchasing during the holiday season.?

Now, the data come adjusted for seasonal effects, meaning that since we expect more delivery people to be hired in the December, the Bureau subtracts what we?d expect in terms of seasonal hires, leaving any gains (or losses) above (or below) that to counted as net new jobs.

But what if a lot more people start shopping online instead of in stores?? In that case, you?d want to crank up the seasonal factor for messengers and probably take down the one for retailers (i.e., since retailers are making fewer seasonal hires under this scenario, you?d want to be careful not to over-adjust by subtracting too many December jobs from the brick-and-mortar establishments).

This is called ?moving seasonality?, reflecting the reality that seasonal patterns that affect different industries can change significantly over time.? Now, the BLS seasonal adjuster does allow for moving seasonality, but it hasn?t picked it up yet for the delivery persons? sector.

A number of time-series analysts like to use STAMP (structural time-series modeling?look it up if you?re interested) to capture these types of movements in the seasonals, and in fact, that method applied to the messengers series works well.

The figure below shows a) the series as published by the BLS yesterday and b) adjusted for the moving seasonality?i.e., the increased December hiring by all those gift-bearing delivery folks that we?re all so happy to see!

As you can see, the BLS seasonally adjusted series has developed a bad case of the spikes over the past few Decembers.? The alternative adjustment which allows for faster moving seasonality takes away most of those spikes.

Bottom line #1: a more accurate read on yesterday?s jobs report would subtract about 30K from the 200K topline number.

Bottom line #2: I wonder what?s going on in other sectors?? Are they now over-adjusting in retail?

Bottom line #3: If you?ve read this far, I salute you, fellow nerd!

Godless Billboard in Fredericksburg; Banner in Religious Freedom Parade - Press Release - Fredricksburg Coalitions of Reason

These words, superimposed over an image of a blue sky and clouds, are slated to appear today on a prominent billboard in Fredericksburg. It is located on the west side of I-95, three miles north of Route 17. The ad will be visible on the right hand side of the road to southbound traffic approaching the city. The 16' x 72' billboard is illuminated at night and will remain up all month. This ad is being placed by the Fredericksburg Coalition of Reason (Fredericksburg CoR) with $7,200 in funding from the United Coalition of Reason (UnitedCoR).

The billboard campaign marks the public launch of Fredericksburg CoR, which is an alliance of five area non-theistic groups, with activities ranging from support to education to parenting. As part of its launch, Fredericksburg CoR will also march in the Religious Freedom Day Parade this coming Sunday, January 8, behind a banner designed after the billboard. The parade begins at 1:30 PM at the Fredericksburg train station and ends at the Thomas Jefferson Religious Freedom Monument, where a ceremony will be held.

This Fredericksburg campaign is the latest in a nationwide effort. Since the spring of 2009 there have been similar billboards, as well as bus ad campaigns, in 27 states and the District of Columbia. The states are Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington and West Virginia. Fredericksburg's billboard will be the first of this type in Virginia.

"The point of our ongoing nationwide awareness campaign is to reach out to the millions of atheists and agnostics living in the United States," explained Fred Edwords, national director of the United Coalition of Reason. "Such non-theists sometimes don't realize there's a community for them because they're inundated with religious messages at every turn. We hope our effort will serve as a beacon and let them know they aren't alone."

Reaching out to the like-minded isn't the only goal of the coalition: "We hope people will realize that we are a regular part of the community," said Matthew Jordan, spokesperson for Fredericksburg CoR. "Folks like us live all over Virginia. We're your friends and family, neighbors and coworkers. We might even be sitting near you in your pew at church."

"Being visible is important to us," Edwords concluded, "because, in our society, atheists and agnostics often don't know many people like themselves. Moreover, if traditionally religious people can be open about their views, why can't we be open about ours?"

The right to religious freedom has a rich history in Virginia, and its birthplace was Fredericksburg. It was here 235 years ago that Thomas Jefferson helped draft what would become the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom, a significant step leading to the first amendment to the U.S. Constitution, noted Rep. Rob Wittman, R?1st District, in his keynote address Sunday at the annual Religious Freedom Day ceremony. ?He understood how critical that right was for our nation,? Wittman said as the Knights of Columbus and Knights Templar in their plumed hats and capes and several other groups stood on either side of the Thomas Jefferson Religious Freedom Monument on Washington Avenue. Virginians at the dawn of the new United States of America had ?vigorous debates? over what fundamental rights Americans should have, Wittman said. Patrick Henry refused to ratify the Constitution if it didn?t include a bill guaranteeing certain ones, and James Madison battled opposition to get such a bill included. Like the statute that Jefferson said was among his three proudest accomplishments, the first amendment in the Bill of Rights prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion or impeding the free exercise of religion. ?It?s an honor to live in a nation where we have such religious freedom,? said Wittman, who asked for a moment of silence in honor of the men and women who are fighting and dying to preserve it. The ceremony, which began with a parade from the Fredericksburg train station, included the laying of a wreath at the monument.
